The list was compiled to celebrate International Women ’ s Day ( Wednesday 8th March 2023 ), a global day which recognises the social , economic , cultural , and political achievements of women . The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women ’ s equality .
IWD has occurred for well over a century , with the first IWD gathering in 1911 supported by over a million people . Today , it belongs to all groups collectively everywhere . Each year there is a theme and

this year the theme is Embrace Equity . Equity acknowledges that people do not begin life in the same place and that circumstances can make it more difficult for people to achieve the same goals . Inequity affects many people , but most commonly historically it has marginalised communities such as women , people of colour , disabled people , the economically disadvantaged , and those from the LGBQT + community .
The goal of equity is to change systemic and structural barriers that get in the way

of people ’ s ability to thrive . IWD is needed as a platform for change more than ever . Only a few months ago , Afghanistan ’ s higher education minister announced regression , with women banned from attending university in the country . Wherever we are in the world , women with a voice need to stand up for those who are silenced . It is only through education that we can begin to build truly inclusive communities and that ’ s something worth shouting about .
I ’ m passionate about using The Business

Exchange as a vehicle for positive change . To support this year ’ s # EmbraceEquity theme we held a special event on International Women ’ s Day at Walcot House in Bath with a panel of amazing women from our community who continually strive to lift others . It was a fantastic evening that brought together over 80 women . Check out the highlights video on YouTube . |
