HAVE YOU TAKEN YOUR EYE OFF BREXIT? YOU’ RE NOT ALONE
Julie Moktadir, Partner in Stone King’ s Immigration Team, explains how the firm is supporting businesses pre-and post-Brexit, and helping them deal with the challenges 2021 will bring.
Collaboration due to Covid-19 has seen so many businesses come together, and is a welcome reminder of how this new way of working and sharing ideas can benefit so many.
We all know times are challenging but, by harnessing that collective spirit and working together we’ ve already seen some great initiatives even in these difficult times, Marcus Rashford’ s Free School Meals campaign is an example of just one.
Of course, there is a lot of uncertainty- many of us are looking ahead to the Christmas break but are still unsure of what restrictions may be in place during the festive time.
But while our ability to move around England is in doubt, there is at least certainty when it comes to Europe.
The transition period ends on 31st December and with that an end to the freedom of movement.
Unsurprisingly, many businesses have taken
|
their eyes off the Brexit ball despite the fact that it is fast-approaching.
Instead, they’ ve shown the business grit and nous we’ d expect, rolling with the many Covid-19 punches before coming up with new ways of working and collaborations to keep their organisations going, whether a small café morphing into a takeaway or a large company moving its employees to home working.
But now is the time to make sure your business is very much in order.
In the same spirit of togetherness, we’ ve developed a self-audit tool for businesses so you can see if you are Brexit-ready.
After all, whether you like it or not, Brexit will come into effect from 1st January 2021 and will affect every sector.
We wanted to keep the online tool free and simple to use for all businesses.
We know it will really help businesses that rely on the movement of people from outside
|
the UK, as well as supporting those that have a sponsorship license, and others to make important decisions about their future.
We hope this will help clients and non-clients alike be confident they are Brexit-ready.
After all, rolling with the punches takes energy so we are happy to help take some of the pressure off.

Where are all the candidates?
With the Coronavirus pandemic causing an economic downturn and high levels of redundancies, many are deeming 2020 to be the‘ Age of the Employer,’ with businesses having their pick of the crop when it comes to attracting talent. However, recent studies show that 75 per cent of business owners are having a problem finding the right people. So, what could be causing this deficiency?
Dan Barfoot, Operations Director at CMD Recruitment, discusses the possible reasons …
Market uncertainty Unfortunately, redundancies are increasing. While this means that there may be more job seekers, it also means that much of the top talent still in work are now working harder than ever to keep their positions. Consequently, fewer of these individuals are seeking new posts and are instead focusing on maintaining job stability with their current employer.
A switch to a new employer carries a great deal of risk for an employee.
Candidate curiosity With the uptake in working from home, candidates are able to browse job opportunities with relative ease. They can also make recruitment calls and take part in video interviews without worrying about hiding this from their employer or booking time off work.
As a result, the candidates may be using video interview opportunities as a way of testing the water, rather than being seriously committed to getting the job.
Higher expectations With many employers believing that there is now a wider talent pool who are all desperate for work, some of them may reduce their benefits or pay package to get more for their money. Many employers believe they can advertise roles for lower pay because the demand is there.
However, low offers are not conducive to creating positive, long-term employeremployee relationships. Not providing employees with a fair pay and benefits package will reduce employee retention rates.
How can you find the right talent? With such a turbulent marketplace at the moment, it is hard for businesses and candidates to understand their position and set their expectations. This is where a recruitment consultant can really help. A consultant not only understands the business and the candidates but is also fully up to date with a frequently changing marketplace.
As an employer, using a recruitment consultant through the hiring process allows you to gain insider market access, so you know how to be in the best position to attract the talent you want at a realistic budget.
Ignore the supply and demand curve
Instead of re-advertising roles and stretching out the recruitment process, it can save time, money, and hassle by ignoring the notion of the‘ employer’ s market.’ Focus instead on what your business needs by mapping out the quickest, most efficient and effective way to achieve this.
