Organizer’ s Message

For those of us directly involved in putting cottages and homes back together over the last year( Since the May 2012 Re-Build Show) there have been many lessons learned, many challenges overcome.

The fi rst challenge remains dealing with the paperwork involved. Contractors have had mixed results as they tried to cope with what the program administrators wanted, and what they did not want.
Speaking from our own experience, initially we were frankly opposed to the invasive nature of the program’ s requests for more and more detail. In the real world, contractors seldom reveal how they arrive at the price they charge, and it felt like big brother was getting a little too cozy.
As time went on, we became more accustomed to divulging our budgets, as contractors, until fi nally the Program began to toss our bids back at us because we were giving them too much information! Now we are back at square one, providing a handful of specifi c prices within each bid. So it has been a learning curve, and no doubt the rules will continue to change. Today we( The Builder’ s Track Ltd.) share our experience and information with a range of contractors, helping them navigate the program

effectively. The goal is to make it easier for contractors to successfully bid work as well as easier for owners to obtain bids. We now see a variety of foundation solutions along the lake. Most are raising cottages an average of four feet, but some have gone to eight feet to make the space more usable for future purposes. Building Authorities have
