On Thursday last week
William entered England
to hopefully win back the
crown he was promised.
William and his Norman
army travelled to Hastings,
England
to fight Harold
Godwinson’s army for the
crown.
Fortunately for William he
won. William is now in
charge of England. Read
on to find out more about
his battle plan and why the
Saxon army and their
leader lost.
Why William Wanted
The Crown
William wanted the crown
because Edward The
Confessor was his cousin
once removed and Edward
had promised him the
throne. Edward died
without an heir therefore
meaning there was no
King for a little while.
There
were
three
contenders for the throne
Harald Hardrada King Of
Denmark,
Harold
Godwinson Earl Of Wessex
and William. Harold won.
William took a stand.
This is William’s battle
plan. His idea was to run
up the hill to the Saxons
and
pronounce
that
William was dead. They
played that trick many
times. Groups of the Saxon
fyrd ran down the hill to
kill the Normans thinking
that William was dead.
Each time the Normans
would take control and kill
the Saxons. They did this
until they had killed
enough Saxons to see the
King.
Then
William
gathered his archers and
told them to fire at the
Housecarls before finally
killing King Harold. The
reason why the Saxons
lost is the fact that they
left formation unlike the
Normans
who
kept
formation therefore won
the Battle Of Hastings.
Another thing that helped
William was the fact that
he had 10,000 well trained
soldiers who were put into
different categories but
Harold only had 7,000.
