Science and Discovery Today aDiscoveryday.

. The word astronomy aquires a new meaning thanks to the scientist Galileo Galilei from Pisa. Looking for new ways of observing the sky, he took the Dutch lens, created in 1607, and arranged them as to make a new device, called telescope. It is composed by various pieces: a wooden tub with a concave lens at one end and a convex one at the other. For the first time he can observe the depths of the universe. Galileo has just presented his revolutionary invention to the Venetian government in 1609

Dutch telescopes were composed of a convex and a concave lens, as this construction did not invert the image. Lippershey's design had only a 3x magnification, which was improved by Galileo the following year. Galileo had heard of the "Dutch perspective glass" by means of which distant objects appeared nearer and larger.
