R e a d i n g L i t e r a c y for learners to become good readers later on in life, it is necessary to encourage them to appreciate reading at a very young age. The simple workshop activities presented here involve pre-school children and pupils at the lower level, from grades 1 to 6, aged six to twelve. 1 st Activity: The Reading Fairy: This activity involves pre-school children. Once a month, a teacher disguised as a reading fairy reads fairy-tales to kindergarten children. After the reading the children play various games, and do all kinds of craftwork connected to the fairy-tale they have listened to. The reading fairy reads a fairy- tale while princes and princesses listen attentively. After the reading the pupils make their friends ladybugs for good luck. 52
