I feel great knowing that the wind beneath our wings is an extraordinary model in which dental residents get exceptional training and solid experience while providing equitable and affordable oral healthcare to the world ’ s neediest populations .
During the 2015-2016 residency year , NYU Lutheran Dental Medicine postdoctoral programs benefited whole communities and treated more than 600,000 adults and children in 27 U . S . states , Puerto Rico , the U . S . Virgin Islands and West Indies . Our residents , faculty and staff provided oral health care services valued at nearly $ 260 million to people who otherwise would likely have gone without the needed care due to socioeconomic circumstances or other marginalized factors .
Because the patients who come to our affiliated Community Health Centers ( CHCs ), Federally Qualified Health Centers ( FQHCs ), and Indian Health Service Centers ( IHS ) are among the most underserved , their dental needs span a wide range of complex conditions . By exposing residents to patients who in many cases experience unique and challenging health issues inherent in marginalized underserved populations ," our programs prepare residents to confidently and expertly handle all oral health challenges faced as a future dental practitioner . Equally important , our programs give residents an immersion experience in addressing people of diverse ethnic backgrounds , people with special needs , and people with serious medical conditions , therefore giving them the tools and experience to demonstrate cultural competence and compassion in providing patient care in their professional futures .
Please take a moment to check out details and highlights of our 2015-2016 growth in the tables and graphic depicted on the pages that follow .
I hope you share my pride in being part of the most innovative and largest postdoctoral residency program in the world .
