MESSAGE FROM DR . MARTIN LIEBERMAN , VICE PRESIDENT , GRADUATE DENTAL EDUCATION
This edition of The Bridge is dedicated to Dr . Neal Demby , who passed away last month after a 50-year career with the Family Health Centers at NYU Langone .
Dr . Demby was a visionary for the dental community across the world . He pioneered the idea of training dental residents while also bringing affordable dental care to patients in need . Dr . Demby ’ s vision for a “ dental institution without walls ” has formed a network of community-based dental residency programs that has become the largest postgraduate dental program in the country and the world . He forever changed the model of postdoctoral dental residency programs by placing oral health equity at the forefront of his vision and ensuring that impoverished and marginalized populations throughout the United States and the Caribbean gained access to respectful and quality oral health care .
We celebrate him for living his passion fully , while at the same time , caring for those he mentored , hired , and trained as members of his extended family . He enriched the health and lives of countless numbers of patients and colleagues , including all of us entrusted with perpetuating his extraordinary legacy .
True to Dr . Demby ’ s original mission , our goal at NYU Langone Health is to serve , to teach , and to discover ; this is achieved daily through our integrated academic culture devoted to excellence in patient care , education , and research .
I don ’ t know that Dr . Demby or any of us could have imagined we would find ourselves at this point , two years into this pandemic . But through it all we continue to learn and grow . We are listening , working collaboratively , and creating new and innovative ways to improve outcomes . We are developing plans and strategies to ensure equitable opportunities for learning and to improve accessibility and quality of oral health services for everyone . We have seen firsthand that we are stronger together . Our perseverance and resilience will help us continue to deliver our plan , accelerate progress , and hold ourselves accountable to those we serve .
I ’ m looking forward to the future of our programs . I know Dr . Demby would be proud of each of you . I thank you for all you do for our residents , faculty , your patients , and staff to deliver the best possible patient care and educational experience .
