SPOTLIGHT ON QUALITY IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS
“ Federally Qualified Health Centers ( FQHCs ) serve as a point of care for over 28 million patients annually , many of whom are uninsured , living in poverty , and located in rural areas . These social determinants of health create chronic conditions , including a disproportionate burden of oral disease , within a vulnerable patient community . Facilitated by better access to technology infrastructure and coordinated primary care delivery , FQHCs have been at the forefront of providing comprehensive , personcentered health care . … They are also charged with regular reporting and continual quality improvement exercises to ensure quality of care and an approach to care delivery that matches the needs of their communities .” – Oral Health Value-Based Care : The Federally Qualified Health Center ( FQHC ) Story , National Association of Community Health Centers and DentaQuest Partnership , 2020
Are There Racial / Ethnic Disparities in Dental Treatment Planning Completion ? A Record Review on Root Canal Therapy ( RCT ): This quality improvement ( QI ) activity was conceptualized by Margaret K . Mason , DMD , MA , Vice President and Senior Administrator of Dental Medicine at Family Health Centers at NYU Langone , and builds upon the project titled , Identifying Barriers to Phase I Treatment Plan Completion and Planning Strategies to Improve Treatment Plan Completion Rates at Family Health Centers at NYU Langone conducted by the General Practice Residency ( GPR ) program ( Chadive H , Fung H , Moses L , Dhar S , Bina B , Lieberman M ). The design of the current project is a retrospective chart review , and it was determined to be a QI activity by the NYU Grossman School of Medicine Institutional Review Board ( IRB ). The Research Office would like to take this opportunity to encourage dental residents and faculty conducting projects at FQHCs and other sites to consider using QI activities to fulfill requirements for research and public health projects . For guidance in completing the official NYU Grossman School of Medicine IRB Self-
Certification Form for Determining Whether Your Proposed Activity is Quality Improvement ( QI ), please contact Tina Littlejohn , MSW , Research Program Coordinator , at Dentalresearch @ nyulangone . org .
