When the pandemic first peaked in New York State , the biggest challenges were governmental . There were mixed messages coming from different government offices and it took several months for dentistry to be deemed an essential service . There were challenges in obtaining enough N95 masks and redeploying faculty and residents to take on new roles within the hospital system , roles they were not previously trained for , but had to “ learn as they go .” Our dental team met the challenges head on . Fifty-one residents and fourteen attendings from 5 of our general and specialty training programs were reassigned over seven weeks . The dental teams worked 12 hour shifts performing blood gas analysis and reporting in the medical ( MICU ) and surgical
( SICU ) intensive care units , while also helping in the ER and providing point of care testing at Augustana , a facility previously closed , but reopened to accommodate the volume of COVID patients .
