A political significance of the match
This match doesn't have just sporting
significance, but a political one, too.
It is a kind of first international
recognition of Croatia. The match
was played as part of the
celebration of the return of the
monument to Josip Jelacic to
Zagreb's central square. The match
was held under the auspices of
Franjo Tuđman, the President of the
Republic of Croatia.
The jersey debut
The match marked the debut of the Croatian national team's checkered
jersey, designed by Miroslav Sutej, a Croatian avant-garde painter and
graphic artist, who also designed the poster for the match.
