JUAN FRANCISCO BLANCO
“He is the Spirit that is in charge of all fish that live in all the
waters of the world, and he will provide your dinner tonight.
What would you like to eat, Jonathan?” asked Zotz.
“I would like shrimp. I love to eat shrimp,” Jonathan said.
“I would like shrimp too!” Viviana said. “I am very hungry,”
“And for you, Bardala, what would you like to eat tonight?”
asked Zotz.
“Lobster! But, I can’t eat it raw. I am really hungry for
lobster; my dad caught one for me two nights ago. I can sit,
remember him and my mom,” Bardala said, with an edge to her
voice.
“I’m sure you do miss your parents, however, you agreed to
go when summoned. I will try to make your journey more
pleasant for you. We do need a fire to warm you, and some food
for you to eat. Balam Acab, summon Huehue, the Fire Spirit.
Have him build us a good campfire. Then, to help the humans
understand we mean them only good, summon Kai Yum,” Zotz
said.
“And who is this Spirit?” Bardala asked.
Just then Huehue appeared and started building a fire. First,
little sticks flew in the air and settled on the bare ground. A
flame came off the end of Huehue’s hand and started the small
sticks on fire. Then larger sticks arrived, and also settled on the
fire, while other sticks piled up magically nearby for later use.
After Huehue had the fire going nicely, the Spirit Kai Yum
appeared from the Mayan stone stela. In answer to Bardala’s
question, soft flute music with an accompanying drumbeat filled
the night air.
