THE BLUE FEATHER

“You don’t understand what is happening here, Anne. You
can’t see inside a body with just your eyes to see the healing
process,” Tital whispered.
It came as a complete, welcomed surprise when finally little
Blacky raised his small head off of Tital’s hand. Blacky’s eyes focused, and he looked over at the little girl, and then stretched out
his body. He slowly stood up next to Tital, gave him a nod with
his head, like he could tell what Tital had done for him. Wagging
his tail, he barked, growled once, and then jumped down out of
the back of the pickup truck. He ran over to defend his territory,
seeing a much bigger dog, Brilloso. Blacky suddenly stopped,
barked again and then started wagging his tail at Brilloso,
wanting a friend.
“Blacky is all well!” Anne screamed to her brothers. Bardala
helped her off Belleza, and Anne ran screaming, “He’s all well!”
She scooped Blacky up into her arms. Blacky started licking her
face to show how happy he was to be healed. The father and
uncle came back over to the pickup truck with the boys, and
looked around to see what was happening. They were not able
to believe what their eyes told them, that Blacky was healed.
The boys ran after their sister, and were all excited at having
their own dog back, able to play with them again.
“How did you do that?” asked the surprised father, asTital
jumped out of the back of the pickup truck, dropping something
small, unnoticed into the tall grass.
“Let’s just say it wasn’t Blacky’s day to visit Xibalbá, and leave
it at that,” Tital said as he walked towards Anne. The father just
shook his head, not understanding. Tital reached into his pocket,
and quickly pulled out one of the bags of gold dust.
