The shortage of affordable housing to rent in East Herts was documented in a Housing Needs Survey presented in November 2015. When I asked a Public Question about this at Full Council meeting on March 2nd I was told that the Council holds the provision of affordable housing as a “Top priority” and yet it has no specific plans for any action! It claims that it is prevented from providing new housing by Government Regulations. What is wrong with the Council? Last year Squadron Leader Nicky Nesbitt took the salute and we hope she will be able to take the salute again this year. All contingents will muster in Basbow Lane (next to the police station) at 12.30pm to march up Windhill to the Royal British Legion Club. There will be a short Service of Remembrance outside the Royal British Legion Club and the public will then be welcomed into the Club by the Mayor and President of the Club where a BBQ and musical is wrong with the Government? Can’t they see the misery that this lack of housing is causing? I understand that our MP, Mark Prisk visited the Night Shelter in Bishop’s Stortford and met some homeless people. We live in a very affluent part of the country, where there is an appalling lack of affordable housing and a need for a Night Shelter. I wonder if Mark Prisk might be able to do something to help? The first was on quite a small scale with the Mayor and a few Army Cadets marking the occasion with a short service outside the Royal British Legion at 28 Windhill. The following year, a Committee was formed to make it into an Event to involve our Community and we now have a Parade and Open Day at the RBL Club. There is a lovely garden at the rear of the Club where members of the Public can come with children to enjoy the day. We now take part in the Carnival Parade which takes place of the Saturday before (16th June) and we decorate a vehicle and give out flyers publicising Armed Forces Day as we pass through the Town Centre. We need funds for: • Printing flyers to give out at the Carnival and Order of Service leaflets • Printing Banners – to advertise the event around Town. • Bunting, and hand held flags and decoration of the Club and Garden • Refreshments for the Cadets – we fund the cost of a hotdog/burger and a drink for Cadets taking part in the parade (cost was £240 last year) • St. John Ambulance attendance The Armed Forces Day Committee work with Royal British Legion Club and Branch Committees, the Bishop’s Stortford Town Council, the Mayor of Bishop’s Stortford, Bishop’s Stortford Police (for the road closure for the Parade), and local military service organisations headed up by Parade Marshall PA Snook, Flt Lt RAFVR(T), Officer Commanding, 1096 (Bishop’s Stortford) Sqn ATC. We also liaise with local churches and neighbouring residents regarding the parade time to ensure the road closure is known to them.
