Annual Isabel Hospice Bike Ride was Wheely Good!
The 9th annual Isabel Hospice ‘On
Your Bike’ sponsored bike ride, was the
biggest and best so far, as over 400
people supported the local charity by
taking on a 25k, 50k or 100k distance.
The fundraiser was opened by Cllr
George Cutting, the Mayor of Bishop’s
Stortford and took place on Bank
Holiday Sunday (27th May).
Organiser Beth Hardy said “We are
delighted that so many people took
part in On Your Bike again. First over
the line was 12 year old George Berry
from Bishops Stortford who took part
in the 25k distance. Stuart Bertram,
who took part with ‘Team Banana’ from
Ware did the 100k distance on a vintage
Chopper! Hats off to them both.
On Your Bike become one the most
popular events in the Isabel Hospice
calendar. The ride, which started from
the Bishop’s Stortford Rugby Club
appealed to riders of all abilities
because we had three distances on
offer, and this year we improved
the 50 and 100k routes to take in
a refreshment stop at Markwell
Pavilion.”

“The fundraiser is expected to raise
over £10,000 for Isabel Hospice once
all the riders have donated their
sponsorship money, which would pay
for the Hospice at Home team for
two weeks! The team visit patients at
home, building relationships of trust
and reassurance, managing what
are often complex conditions, and
enabling people to spend their last
weeks at home with their family rather
than be admitted to hospital.”
Beth added “I’d like to thank all the
cyclists who took on the challenge of
On Your Bike. All the marshals who
made the day safe and enjoyable for
the cyclists, Nockolds for sponsoring
the event, and their Principle Associate
Sarah Lockyer for taking part along
with 8 other Nockolds colleagues.
“This year Genmar provided a cup
which will be presented in July to the
team that raises the most sponsorship.
We will also be awarding the winner
with a place to the prudential ride
London ride event in 2019.. Thanks
also to the Bishop’s Stortford Rugby
club for kindly letting Isabel Hospice
host On Your Bike at the club for the
past nine years, East Herts Police,
Bishops Stortford Fire Station, Raynet,
Pro Medicus, East Herts Council,

July – Celebrating Volunteers
Last month Isabel Hospice celebrated
National Volunteer Week with a series
of short fi lms highlighting the many
different roles the volunteers fi ll within
Isabel Hospice care.
Volunteer Services Manager, Linda
Wood said “We have over 750
volunteers that donated 98,000 hours
last year, which is just incredible. As we
plan to care for more people, earlier in
their journey, we need more volunteers
to help us do this. If you would like to
get involved or if you know anyone
that is interested, please get in touch.
We need volunteers to work in
our shops both in the town, and in
Sawbridgeworth, to drive patients
to and from our Living Well sessions
at the Barnabas Centre in Thorley,
to help with creative activities, to
help at fundraising events and with
can collections at supermarkets.
The opportunities are varied and
interesting, with many of our
volunteers gaining new skills,
confi dence and friends!”
Did you know, that if we paid our
volunteers the National (Real) Living
wage, we would need to spend an
additional £900,000 a year. By them
gifting us their time for free, we are
able to concentrate our resources on
caring for patients and their families at
what is often the darkest of times.
So, thank you to every one of our
volunteers. Please consider joining our
team, you can make a real difference
to local people.
