ENLIGHTENMENT
B O O K S / F I L M / T V/ M U S I C / G E E K
PORTRAIT
FROM BELFAST
TO PARIS
Flo O’Riordan, from Belfast,
lost her son Sean, aged 13, on
March 23, 1972. He was shot
in the back of his head, a
victim of the spiralling Troubles
gripping Northern Ireland then.
This portrait of Flo was created
last year by Northern Irish artist
Colin Davidson, who painted
Angela Merkel for TIME
magazine’s Person of the Year
2015 cover and who taught
Brad Pitt to paint.
The painting is part of a
series of portraits of people
bereaved during The Troubles.
They are being shown at the
Ulster Museum, Belfast, before
transferring to Paris – a city
that itself was deeply damaged
by terrorism in 2015 – later
this month.
X Silent Testimony is at the
Ulster Museum, Belfast, until
January 17; nmni.com – and
the Centre Culturel Irlandais,
Paris, from Jan 29 until March
6; centreculturelirlandais.com
