I had a Talk with My Veil

By Lisa Thomas
I had a talk with my veil .
She was not cooperating like I wanted . I bought her at Marrakesh Market so I don ’ t know how old she is , but based on her antics , I ’ m guessing the veil equivalent of a toddler . Or a teenager .
“ Remember ”, she said , “ Remember they told you we are not trained .”
“ Ah , but I am not your first owner , I bought you from an experienced dancer , therefore should I not have had a reasonable expectation that you were trained ?”
“ Yes , but I was trained for her , not you .” I detected a tiny bit of derision coming from her . I suspect that a veil is never trained so much as she trains her dancer .
“ Even so , you were trained , surely you didn ’ t forget everything .” “ No , I didn ’ t ”, she said . “ But YOU are still somewhat raw in technique . And I ’ m just not sure you know how to fully appreciate me .”
Then she asked why I bought her . I explained that she and her sister are so beautiful , I couldn ’ t resist . Then she asked if that was the only reason , to which I replied it was also because she is made of silk .
