develop constructs – a thoughtful structure that defines dance movements . Next , I use this analytical process to take notes to capture the dance movements I observe . Then , I transfer this structured approach to defining how other dancers move – to an instructional strategy to provide students with movement structure . Then , I give the students a range of movement options to create their own movement styling .
In the back of my mind , I think : “ If I die tomorrow , I will have left my students with the legacy of a structure that will serve them well as they continue to dance .” I am grateful for my mentor , Bert Balladine , who supported my creativity and provided a pathway to becoming a performing dancer . Bert shared stories from performing worldwide while giving us tips to move from just dancing steps to becoming beautiful stage personalities . Bert left a lasting legacy of love for dance and performance .
Enjoy performance , the audience will appreciate you
Here is a true story to share that illustrates the power of dance and the coaching of Bert Balladine to create an outstanding performance that audiences will celebrate . Years ago , my husband Carl and I were in the audience at the San Francisco Opera House to watch a special program of dance representative of the cultural expanse of dance taught in San Francisco .
When Bert Balladine entered the stage with a dancer who did not fit the expected guidelines of – lithe body , beautiful hair , and makeup and with a 70s gypsy look costume – the audience actually booed and we heard comments of “ who invited them to perform at this prestigious dance event ?” But , I ’ m glad to report that magically the audience became transfixed by the beauty of the performance – and 10 minutes later , the entire audience of dance aficionados was on their feet with boisterous clapping and exclamations of Bravo !
Learn from this story . My advice is to “ go with the flow , meld with the music , and enjoy the moment and your audience – and they will enjoy you and your performance .”
