In 2007, I was invited by Zakir Hussain to perform with him and many others in Mumbai, India, for an all-day memorial for his father, Alla Rakha. Zakir’s father had been Ravi Shankar’s drummer for about thirty years. Music started at 7AM and went to 10PM. Musicians from all over India and the world attended this memorial event. I got to jam with John McLaughlin, great Jazz guitarist, and others, plus had a solo on my Egyptian tabla and played some Riqq for 2500 people. It truly was an international music happening. There was also a group of elderly ladies from Morocco who played drums and violin who did some dancing, singing and played interlocking rhythms on bandirs and percussion instruments. The Indian audience loved them. There was even a jazz group from Europe and many folk and classical musicians of renown from all over India. Vince with Necati and Halil Performing Iraqi music In 2011, I went to the University of North Carolina to teach and perform Iraqi music in a a seminar of Iraqi art, literature and Iraqi music.
