Beautiful weather followed us. We made several stops, the first being the very famous Art Naji Ceramic Factory. It boasts the most superior ceramics in Fez. Their intricate tile work is called “jellij”. We learned how the artisans created the beautiful mosaics all over Morocco by placing the jellij (chipped pieces) upside down, then add the cement and when dry, lift up a beautiful work of art. We saw piecemeal work done by artisans sitting on the floor chipping away. They got paid by each tiny miniscule piece added to their piles. As much as I liked the small pieces for sale, what I really wanted was a huge, intricately tiled, custom water fountain - a mere $4000, not including postage. Photo by Nancy Brady
