Karen Barbee – The Innovator and Live Music Champion Amaya says of Karen : “ Aside from being a top U . S . performer , her devotion to the culture , the language and history - and the passion for saving and showcasing live music make her stand out as an Icon . The dance world is richer for her input and artistry period .”
Karen began belly dancing at the age of 10 . The first 40 years of her dance career were the standard , busy fare of a dedicated , focused dancer who gave up a secure corporate job to follow her artistic passion : gigs , lessons , troupes , studios , workshop bookings , CD and DVD production .
She spent 20 years of that 40 compromising her dance opportunities to navigate the storms associated with being a professional belly dancer married to an elected government official in Texas . Only recently , since her husband retired from political life , has she been able to boldly step back into the local dance scene .
Given her degree in computer science and her amicable relationship with new technology , Karen was an early adopter and taught online classes . She and the teachers at her Karavan Studio have been populating the library of Karavan Online since 2010 !
