Why Every Beauty Lover Needs an Aesthetician

You have a personal trainer, but do you have a personal aesthetician? They certainly have their similarities. For instance, you’ll need to visit more than just once to see serious improvements—but the results are more than worth it. Different from a dermatologist, an aesthetician’s passions combine both the science of skin with the love for a beautiful complexion.

Kim James, a personal aesthetician based in Salt Lake City, shares some of her expertise regarding the importance of skincare and high-end treatments used on her clients. She weighs in on the top 5 reasons why you need a personal aesthetician.

#1 You could save on cosmetics. When approaching beauty, skin should always be a number one priority. Women spend thousands on different makeup and skincare products in hopes of either “fixing” flaws or covering them up. “Instead of masking the problem you should first address it”, says James. A good aesthetician will lead you to the right products to buy for your skin type, as well as warn you of which ones to avoid entirely.

#2 You’ll realize how little you know about your own skin. You may think you know your skin but could be completely surprised after making a visit to a professional aesthetician. Most women have misdiagnosed their skin type, resulting in shelves full of products that could be useless or even detrimental to their skin health.

#3 You could be hurting your skin without realizing it. A common mistake James sees first-time clients make is over-exfoliation. Although our skin does need a little boost now and then in order to remove dead skin cells and allow for proper product absorption, it can also be extremely detrimental when practiced too often. “Over-exfoliating can cause dryness, as it is the culprit to impaired barrier function. The Stratum Corneum—which is the top layer of skin—becomes damaged, which causes you to lose critical moisture. Your skincare products will be virtually ineffective,” says James. She recommends exfoliating no more than once a week, using a method approved by your personal aesthetician.
