Batesville Bulldogs Run Away With Both EIAC CC Titles
Sept . 22 was a perfect morning if you are a runner , and it certainly produced a great atmosphere for the EIAC cross country championships at Batesville High School . With morning temperatures in the upper 50 ’ s and low 60 ’ s and an overcast sky , conditions were ripe for great performances , and it did not disappoint as a great number of competitors recorded personal-best times for the 5K distance .
This year seemed to be the year for underclassmen to shine in both races with a sophomore girls ’ champion and freshman boys ’ champion . Also , while the 2017 boys ’ race included 9 seniors in the all-conference listing and only one freshman , the 2018 race featured 5 of the 15 spots being claimed by freshmen and just three seniors . Girls ’ Championships The girls ’ race was first to start the day , and the team competition looked to be a close race between the top teams of Batesville , East Central , and Greensburg with all eight conference teams fielding at least five runners to secure a varsity roster for the race .
Fifty-three ladies took off for the race , and the entire field got off to a fast 1K start . It did not take long after that point for Greensburg sophomorestandout Brenner Hanna to assert herself on the field and begin to stretch out a lead . The defending EIAC champion finished the course in an impressive 5K time of 18:35 to claim the individual conference title and set a new course record .
The top 15 individual spots earn all-conference honors , and a lot of key points in the team competition would play out in those top positions with three from each team claiming all-conference status . With coaches and fans of all the teams running all over the course to offer encouragement , the Lady Bulldogs were able to garner the places needed to secure the team championship
with 55 points , followed closely by Greensburg with 61 and East Central with 67 .
More impressive was that Batesville and Greensburg had full varsity lineups of underclassmen , and only Batesville ’ s runner-up finisher Elizabeth Loichinger is a junior . All three top teams sport large numbers in their programs on both the girls ’ and boys ’ team which should result in great competition in coming years .
The remaining team scores included Franklin County ( 139 ), South Dearborn ( 155 ), and Lawrenceburg ( 201 ).
Those earning the top five spots for all-conference were : Brenner Hanna ( G ), Elizabeth Loichinger ( B-19:27 ), Lily Pinckley ( B-19:36 ), Emily Mangels ( G-19:51 ), Lauren Kelly ( FC-20:10 ).
Places 6-10 were : Emilee Wedding ( EC-20:24 ), Emma Fey ( EC-20:27 ), Shannon Dougherty ( 20:31 ), Elizabeth Pavy ( G-20:33 ), and Tylissa Beckner ( C-20:41 ).
Places 11-15 were : Caroline Arndt ( C-20:42 ), Lauren Greiwe ( EC-20:48 ), Hannah Morgan ( LB-20:54 ), Sarah Ripperger ( B-20:54 ), and Natalia Meza ( R-21:06 ). Boys ’ Championships The boys ’ race began with all eight conference teams sporting a varsity lineup for the race and had a total of fifty runners in the race .
The team race was not nearly as contested as the girls ’ race . Batesville placed six runners on the all-conference team and recorded a 25- 42 team score over runner-up Rushville . It was the second title of the day for the Bulldogs and the third conference title in a row for Coach Lisa Gausman ’ s boys ’ teams .
Other team scores for the meet included East Central ( 89 ), Franklin County ( 147 ), South Dearborn ( 205 ), and
Lawrenceburg ( 233 ).
Although the team race may not have been as tight , what played out at the front of the field throughout the race was fun to watch . Batesville freshman standout Ean Loichinger came out strong and looked to put his stamp on these championships . Defending EIAC champion and Rushville senior Andrew Miller along with 2017 conference runnerup Adam Moster , a Batesville junior , engaged in a close race throughout and worked hard to stay with the strong freshman .
Loichinger led nearly the entire race with Miller and Moster nearly stride-for-stride with each other throughout . Their close racing of each other allowed both to push to reel in the freshman harrier . Despite their best efforts to close the gap throughout the race , Miller and Moster were unable to catch Loichinger . Loichinger , the state middle school cross country champion a year ago , came across the line in 16:25 to claim the individual conference title with Miller , breaking away from Moster for a late charge at Loichinger , to finish only seconds behind in 16:29 .
Adam Moster ( B ), runner-up to Miller a year ago , earned third place this year with a time of 16:40 . He was followed by Hunter Butz ( G-17:00 ) and Josh Myers ( B-17:07.7 ), who beat fellow Bulldog freshman Ben Moster with a lean at the line ( 17:07.7 ). The top ten was finished out with a trio of Lions in Cole Dixon ( R-17:26 ), Caleb Krodel ( R-17:32 ), Kyle Stanley ( R-17:33 ) and another Bulldog in Adam Hollowell ( B-17:35 ).
The final five all-conference spots were earned by Kyle Gutfreund ( EC-17:38 ), Garrett Ardis ( EC-17:39 ), Dillon Murray ( B-17:42 ), Andrew Johnson ( G-17:43 ), and Sawyer Sanders ( G-17:48 ).
