Parris 3-Time
Champion, Hall Sixth

The IHSAA Wrestling State
Finals were on February 16
and 17. Four wrestlers from
area schools competed with

Saturday quarterfinal win over
Central Noble’s Levi Leffers
set up a semi-final against un-
defeated Ryan Hammond of
Whiteland. It ended with yet
another fall in only 3:53.
The championship match
paired Parris against Bran-
don Streck. Parris, (the #1
nationally-ranked wrestler at
his weight class) kept a capac-
ity crowd that typically thins
gradually throughout the finals,
in their seats until his match.
He did not disappoint. He
began the match very aggres-
sively and appeared to be seek-
ing to set a quickest pin record
for a championship match.
Once that time transpired in
the match, Parris methodically
took care of the Merrillville se-
nior by fall in 3:08 to claim his
third IHSAA wrestling title.
Despite not getting the
quickest pin record, Parris did
manage to set a new record
for most falls in a state finals.
His pin in the finals gave him
11 for his career in the state fi-
nals and surpassed the record
of 10 set by Ray Frankowski
of Hammond (1936-1938), an
80-year-old record.
Parris, a University of Mich-
igan wrestling recruit, finished
the season 47-0 and his career
at 206-1. Upon the conclusion
of his match and a congratula-
tory hug with his father and
assistant coach Mark Parris, he
proceeded to enjoy the mo-
ment further with a celebratory
lateral drop of Lawrenceburg
Head Coach Mark Kirchgas-
sner on the state finals mat.
South Dearborn freshman
Bryer Hall had an impressive
state finals also. Hall began

Friday night with a decision
over Kyle Lawson of Bell-
mont. In Saturday’s quarterfi-
nals, Hall took a loss to return-
ing state champ Cayden Rooks
of Columbus East to drop into
the consolation bracket.
Hall next wrestled Brycen
Denny of Monrovia and, in
his exciting style, found a
funky spadle finish to record
a fall and advance. Hall lost
to Elkhart Memorial senior
Christian Mejia to place sixth
and finish his season at 48-4.
Franklin County advanced a
pair to the state finals. Stevie
Browning (152) lost on Friday
night to Crown Point senior
Noah Lamore who ended up
third. Browning finished his
senior season with a record of
35-6. Fellow senior and Uni-
versity of Indianapolis football
recruit Michael Bohman (195)
also concluded his high school
wrestling career on Friday
night with a loss to eventual-
state champion Lucas Davi-
son of Chesterton. Bohman
finished the season at 44-6.

Mason Parris’ wrestling
career, and athletic prowess
for that matter, is no secret to
sports fans in Southeastern
Indiana. Parris has excelled
in all three of his high school
sports endeavors and has par-
ticipated in the state finals in

each of them. He participated
in the state finals in football
and track as a junior (with a
chance to return in track yet
this spring) and has been in
the state finals in wrestling all
four years of high school.
What may be lost on some in
all of this is the type of young
man he is around these sports,
in the community, and in the
classroom. Parris is near the
top of his class academically
and acts as a wonderful role
model for younger children
whenever he is approached.
Kids from various schools
will ask him to sign a program
or shirt, and he kindly obliges.
Parris has a few words and
gives the child that wonderful
moment to cherish. He shares
a great smile, perhaps a pic-
ture, and acts gregariously.
Because of his accolades in
the classroom and on the mat,
Parris was recently awarded
the Ward E. Brown Mental
Attitude Award at the conclu-
sion of the IHSAA Wrestling
State Finals. This award is
a $1,000 scholarship to the
school in the name of the re-
cipient. Parris was nominated
for this award by his coach,
Mark Kirchgassner, and his
principal, Bill Snyder.

part of three relay records.
Gomez, undefeated in the
event throughout the regular
s eason, qualified for the IH-
SAA Swimming State Finals
held on February 23-24. In the
preliminaries on Friday night,
Gomez swam a 58.94 and
placed 22nd out of 32 which
narrowly failed to make the
top 16 for the Saturday final.
Several other competitors
finished in the top 3 of an
event at the sectional finals on
Saturday but failed to qualify
for the state meet.
Brandon Loveless’s East
Central Trojans had two relays
place well. The 200-yard med-
ley relay of Jacob Weber, Alex
Ketcham, Jackson Ketcham,
and Ethen Witte finished sec-
ond. The 400-yard freestyle
relay of Ketcham, Ketcham,
Weber, and Matthew Bading-
haus finished third.
EC senior Alex Ketcham
finished third in the 50-yard
freestyle. Jacob Weber placed
third in the 100-yard butterfly.
Sophomore Noah Haessig
finished third in the 100-yard
freestyle. The Milan Indians
are coached by Steve Stock.
In sectional team standings,
EC placed fourth with 242
points. Milan placed sixth
with the most points in school
history for a sectional at 170.
