I have a hard time believing that school will be starting in early August . The break from school seems to pass so quickly , but then the Fall break , Christmas holiday , and Spring break give us time to take trips and help break up the school year .

I ’ d like to congratulate Ray Cutter , who delivers mail in Rising Sun . Counting his time in the U . S . Army of nine years , he has thirty years of service with the U . S . Postal System and is very dedicated to his job . Ray served from 1984-92 with the 101st Airborne ( Screamin ’ Eagles ) in Panama and Saudi Arabia . Ray walks an average of eleven miles per day , and that really adds up . His Grandpa Elmer Richardson and Grandpa Charlie Cutter were both World War II Veterans .

I went out of town for ten days to Branson , Missouri with granddaughter Carli for a National Fast Pitch Softball Tournament . The weather was very , very hot and humid . She had a great time and we were able to ride the go-carts , watch the show at Dolly Parton ’ s Stampede , and visit the Titanic exhibit . Most of the time was spent playing softball , but we were able to get in some quality swimming time too . We extended an extra day so we could visit the Titanic and also “ Ride the Ducks ” but

FURNITURE SHOWROOM 557 W . Eads Parkway Lawrenceburg IN 812-537-0610 we swam too long and had to miss the Ducks . We had ridden them before at Newport , KY . We returned home on Tuesday . That Thursday was when the tragedy happened that killed seventeen people riding those Ducks .

We stopped in St . Louis on the way out and back . When we rode the tram up to the top of the Arch , I remarked I still had my ticket for the Titanic from the night before . I jinxed us because the tram broke down , and we were up at the top for nearly three hours . Next time I ’ ll keep quiet .

Congratulations to Allen Cutter for his 2018 Honorarium for his dedicated service to Ohio County 4-H as a participant and as an adult . It takes people like Allen to make the fair the huge success it has been through the years . Ron Spurlock called and told me how thrilled Allen was to receive the award and that Ron and wife , Connie , are very proud of him .

Another job well done by Mayor Brent Bascom for getting to kiss a cow at the 4-H Fair with his second place finish to Police Chief David Hewitt . They had a great time helping with this fun event with the kids . Cliff Thies joined them , and they all want to do it again . I didn ’ t realize kissing a cow could be such fun , but I heard that all three loved it .

The Rising Sun Ferry has arrived , and the dedication has taken place . Now we ’ re just waiting to start riding it . I think the ferry will be a great asset . I ’ m looking forward to making several trips on it with the family and seeing some new places , or ones I haven ’ t seen for years , on the Kentucky side . I always enjoyed riding the ferry that Les Fogle operated . The kids and I would ride down , get on the boat , and go to the Rabbit Hash General Store . The LADY LUCK should be operating the first part of August . I have a film I took back in the 70 ’ s of the ferry at Vevay , Warsaw , Aurora , and the Anderson Ferry boats .

Thanks to Bryce Kendrick and the officials of the City of Rising Sun for another spectacular fireworks display for the 4th of July . A big crowd enjoyed the event and went home very happy .

The Rising Sun Boys ’ Varsity Basketball Team has a new coach , Rick Scholl , as Chris Jones has moved to Southwestern Indiana to take a job as an Assistant Principal . Good Luck to both .

The major project at the Veterans ’ Tribute Tower is moving right along , and I just love the flags that are flying . I would still like to see a very tall flag pole somewhere on the riverfront where we could fly a big Garrison Flag on special days such as Memorial Day , Flag Day , 4th of July , Labor Day , Veterans ’ Day and a few others . A flag about one-half that size could fly the rest of the time . We have a beautiful

Kystie Jaehnen received an award from the FOP at its convention for her assisting a local officer in dire trouble and the award was for Citizens Assisting Police .

Former Rising Sun resident , Tony Sabo , was recently elected Superior Court Judge in Ventrua Co . California .

We had another successful Shiner Pride Car Show and it takes so many to chip in to make it the huge success it is . It brings a lot of people to town and a lot of money too . I ’ m amazed at how many cars show up to enter the show and try to win a trophy .

Brian Graham is leaving Rising Sun for a new teaching job at Morristown , and we all wish him all the success there is . I ’ ve known Brian for many years and serve on the Park Board with him . He is a lot of fun and has a great sense of humor , and I will miss picking on him .

The side car motorcycles were all over Rising Sun . Mikel Murray and Belinda Schraeder are to be thanked for making this happen . People rode their bikes from over twenty-five states and three nations ( USA , Canada , and Japan ). One hundred eighty-five bikes were registered .

Former Rising Sun player , Alix DeDreu , had an outstanding year at Thomas More College as a Fast Pitch Softball Player . She was chosen for the All Region Team with a pitching record of 23-7 . I have watched her play since she was six years old and would come to our ball field and play on the Diamonds 8U Team .

The 4-H Auction brought in over $ 63,000 for all the animals sold . The program rewards the kids for all their hard work and dedication . I can remember how thrilled Brian and Kelli were when they were able to sell their ducks and chickens . The 4-H Fair crowned Nathan Kappes as King and Kinsey Price as Queen . They were crowned as Prince and Princess back in 2012 .

It won ’ t be too long until we get some cooler weather . I hope this year the trees are very colorful and we can enjoy the wonders of God ’ s beauty . Take care , be thankful for all your blessings , and may God Bless all of you .

Moores Hill is celebrating its 200th birthday on Sept . 22 . The town was once home to Carnegie College and is rich with history . Carnegie will be open for tours . Art from the Moores Hill Elementary School students will be displayed .

Activities are planned for all ages including a broom maker , soap maker , blacksmith , and living history about the Civil War , and much more . Funnel cakes and root beer floats served in commemorative mugs are things to look forward to . ( See ad on page 9 )
