Well , summer has finally arrived . I ’ m sharing some picnic-ready recipes that might give you some ideas for dishes to share when it ’ s your turn to bring a dish to a gathering . Or you might want to make just half of the recipe to use at home . This is especially true for the pasta salad which is sized for a large crowd . Good news - it halves or even quarters well if you are planning to make it at home to have something in the ready for pick-up meals

Pasta Pepperoni Salad 1 box of pasta 1 green pepper , diced 1 red pepper , diced 1 medium red onion , diced 1 package sliced pepperoni 1 can black olives , pitted and sliced 2 tomatoes , diced ½ package dried Italian dressing mix Large bottle Italian dressing
( 16 oz .) 4 oz provolone cheese , diced .

Cook pasta according to package directions . In a large bowl , mix pasta , vegetables , and pepperoni . Add sliced pepperoni and sprinkle dried salad dressing mix over the top . Add 2 / 3 dressing and mix well . ( Reserve remaining dressing to add just before |
serving .) Chill at least 4 hours or overnight . Just before serving , mix in the remaining salad dressing and cheese . |
This is relatively quick to fix and will keep well for several days in the refrigerator . Because I am only one , I make about 1 / 3 of the recipes and pick up the cauliflower and broccoli off the salad bar if I don ’ t want to use an entire head of those recipes . Likewise , the sliced mushrooms are also on the salad bar in small amounts . Make 1 / 3 of the marinade .
Marinated vegetables 1 package button mushrooms 1 package cherry or grape tomatoes 1 head cauliflower ( broken into florets )

1 bunch broccoli ( broken into florets ) 1 cup white vinegar 1 tablespoon sugar 1 tablespoon dill weed 1 teaspoon pepper 1 tablespoon garlic salt 1 ½ cup vegetable oil
Cut vegetables into bite-sized pieces . Mix remaining ingredients and pour over vegetables . Mix well . Refrigerate for 24
hours before serving . Drain vegetables about 30 minutes before serving but reserve marinade for leftovers .
Well , I ’ m off to celebrate the Memorial Day weekend visiting my sister in Columbus , OH . I ’ m looking forward to enjoying some of that city ’ s great restaurants and spending family time together . See you next month .

Managing Diseases and Pests in Common Garden Plants
As gardening season continues , gardeners of all skill levels must consider disease and pest management . Regardless of what you grow , you are likely to face at least a few different disease and pest issues . In this month ’ s article , I ’ ll introduce a couple common disease and pest issues and offer the best Purdue Extension resources available !
If you ’ re anything like me , your garden is full of popular vegetables . Tomatoes , squash , cucumbers , peppers , spinach , and corn are just a handful the commonly cultivated garden crops in our area . Lucky for us , many of these plants face similar pest and disease pressures .
For those that grow cucurbits ( cucumbers , squash , pumpkin , and more ) anthracnose is an always present threat . When assisting a gardener last fall , I came across a great article by Dr . Daniel Egel at Purdue that quickly summarizes this disease . Essentially , anthracnose attacks all aboveground sections of the plant , often presenting with lesions on leaf surfaces and eventual yield losses . Our warm and wet climate is ideal for the growth of the disease , so it is incredibly common . Good crop rotations and contact fungicides containing chlorothalonil or mancozeb are highly effective for management .
Aphid control is another top consideration for gardeners . According to an article from our partners at University of Minnesota Extension , there are over 300 different varieties of aphids and few plants are safe from their wrath . As many of you know , aphids are known for congregating in a hungry cluster on the undersides of leaves . This is where they use sucking mouth-parts to feed on the sap from plants . The initial feeding itself can cause discoloration and even plant dieback .
The byproduct of aphid attacks is the production of a sticky and sweet substance called honeydew which attracts other insects such as ants and promotes the growth of molds . To control for aphids , do your best to encourage the presence of their many natural predators . Horticultural oils often found at garden stores can be very effective on aphids , while also promoting beneficial insects . Stronger insecticides , such as those containing cyfluthrin and permethrin will be more effective for heavy infestations .
Many folks come to me with concerns about overusing pesticides and herbicides in their gardens . When used properly , chemical applications can be extremely effective , but there are many helpful ( and cost-saving ) management tools to consider when it comes to disease and
pest control in your garden . Crop rotation , tool sanitation , use of resistant plant varieties , and protection of beneficial insect populations are just a few of my best suggestions .
