Memorial Day weekend at Oakdale Cemetery is always a moving experience . This year was even more so with the addition of the Dillsboro Veterans Walk honoring two hundred fourteen Veterans . Banners with the names of the service men and women and years of service were hung through the cemetery . Northcutt-Laaker Posts 292 of the American Legion and volunteers from the Heritage Festival Committee set up this unique Memorial Salute to Veterans .
Another season of Dillsboro Summer Concert Series

Communities

begins June 16 with Saffire Express starting at 7 pm . at North and Front Streets . Bring lawn chairs and a cooler , and enjoy the entertainment with friends and neighbors .
Dillsboro Arts new exhibit : ‘ CRAFT - the Real Stuff ’ runs through July 28 .
Thom Maltbie , the curator of the upcoming exhibit , explains , “ A chair is just a chair , right ? Then why don ’ t all chairs look the same ?
In the beginning , there was STUFF : trees , and mud , and animal fur , and rocks , and metal ores – all gifts from the earth . And from that stuff , we made vessels , tools , implements , shelter , clothing , furniture . We also felt the need give these objects our own visual personality .
See Pat Cornett ’ s unique and beautiful rocking chair , along with the work of the potter , the weaver , the basket maker , the blacksmith and others in this exhibition … proof that we ’ re still making visually compelling objects from those ancient and fundamental materials .”

Congratulations to East Central ’ s 2018 graduates ! During the last week of school , all of the seniors did a memory walk through the hallways of their elementary schools while being cheered on by younger students and past teachers . East Central has done the senior walk for two years now , and it was a great success . The seniors who attended Sunman Elementary spent their time catching up with teachers , sharing plans , and recreating old class pictures .

Last month ’ s question was , “ Who established a harness shop in Sunman in 1920 ?” The answer is John Schwing . At the time , automobiles were becoming more common , so he decided to sell old Durant motor cars and start a garage in his harness shop located at 203 W Washington Street . This month ’ s question is , “ When was the Sunman Community Park building dedicated to A . B . Campbell ?” Send me an email with your answer !
I would like you to let me know about family milestones , vacation , or a little bit about Sunman and yourself . Share the good news with me at sunman @ GOBEACONnews . com .
