Evan Ulery’s Bull- dogs had scored 30 points in the first half By only to see the Tigers come back to tie the Maxine Klump game in the fourth; however, after being held scoreless in Community the second half, the Bulldogs Correspondent pulled out the win on a Nate Slavin 21-yard field goal in overtime. [email protected] After both opened up IH- SAA 3A Sectional 31 action with wins on Oct. 19 (Bates- ville over Greensburg 59-19 and Lawrenceburg over North Batesville senior standout Trey Heidlage scores one of his two touchdowns on the night with this 35-yard quarterback sweep in the third quarter. Heidlage and the Bulldogs de- feated Lawrenceburg 28-22. With the win, they advanced to the Sectional 31 championship at Brownstown Central on Nov. 2. Harrison 22-14), the rematch was set at Batesville in the sectional semi-final set for Oct. 26. The game was contested on a cold and rainy autumn night, but the action warmed up in a hurry. The Bulldogs were able to break into the scoring col- umn on the first offensive play from scrimmage. The Bull- dogs found themselves off to an 8-0 lead only a couple of minutes into the game. Ryan Knigga’s Tigers would respond, as they did throughout the night, by completing a drive at the 4:03 mark of the first quarter when freshman quarterback Garrett Yoon scored on a run from 7 yards out. The failed two- point conversion left the score at 8-6. After a big kickoff return to their own 46 by Jake Cruse, the Bulldogs could do little with the drive, yet Nate Slavin’s punt pinned the Tigers down at their own 6-yard line. The Tigers took a bold move to go for a fourth and 2 at their own 24-yard line but came up short, giv- ing the Bulldogs great field position. The Tigers added to this difficulty with a personal foul on third and 10 on a play that would have left it at 4th and 10. The Bulldogs were reward- ed with a first and 10 from the 11-yard line, yet they were then penalized for a holding call that moved the ball back to the 28. On fourth and 25, a failed pass from Austin Pohl- man to Heidlage fell incom- plete. The Tigers were able to withstand the tough field position. The Tigers were able to continue the drive but stalled out when Sam Bowman got great penetration into the backfield to force a sack on fourth and 2. A couple of more possessions ended the first half with the score still at 8-6. Although down by 15 points at one point, the Tigers were not done in this battle nor wanting to call it a wrap on the 2018 season. Law- renceburg took the ball and at its own 28 and sustained a nearly eight-minute drive into the fourth quarter that resulted with Garrett Yoon finding the EC Cross Country Teams Place Pictured are members of the East Central boys’ and girls’ cross country teams. Both teams placed third in the IHSAA Sectional held at Moores Hill on Oct. 6. Batesville took both team titles with Greensburg finishing second in both races. All three teams advanced to the Shelbyville Regional where both Batesville teams and the Greensburg girls’ team also advanced to the semi-state in team competition. Also advancing from the sectional were Jac-Cen-Del and Oldenburg Academy for the boys and South Ripley and South Dearborn for the girls. (Pictures courtesy of Fr. His dive over the left side made the score 21-14 at the 11:15 mark of the fourth. The Tigers took a chance with an onside kick attempt, but it was recovered by Batesville’s Adam Bedel at the Bulldog 48. Bedel, the middle linebacker for the Bulldogs, also had a big night in recording 7 solo tackles and 14 assists on the night, but his block among others along the offensive line on the first play allowed sopho- more running back Austin Pohlman to scamper 52 yards untouched on the first play of the drive to quickly put the Bulldogs back up by two scores. Slavin’s kick was good, and the Bulldogs now had a 28- 14 advantage with just over 11 minutes left to play. That would again prove enough to give the scrappy young quar- terback for the Tigers time to mount another charge at the Bulldog lead. Garrett Yoon attempted one last pass on fourth and 9 that resulted in an intercep- tion by Batesville’s Tyler Myers to seal the victory for the Bulldogs and allow them to advance to the sectional championship game. The final score was 28-22. Lawrenceburg finishes the season at 5-6 and Batesville continued on to face the Brownstown Central Braves of Reed May on November 2 for the Sectional 31 champi- onship. The Batesville record going into that game stood at 9-2.
