leave , he talked to JD about how great it was . JD figured if it was good enough for Tom , it was good enough for him . He enlisted , along with three buddies , before high school graduation but couldn ' t leave until after graduating . They left for Indianapolis the day after graduation . He completed eight weeks of basic training at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio , TX and was transferred as Permanent Party to Amarillo AFB , TX where he worked in Officer Personnel

He was an Airman 2nd Class ( two stripes ) and spent ten months at Parks AFB . Then the Air Force decided JD was needed in the Northeast Air Command , Narsarssuak AFB , Greenland . He didn ' t volunteer for this frigid move but received another stripe and left as an Airman 1st Class .
The purpose of this base in Greenland , which is owned by Denmark , was to refuel planes going to Europe . Many F-86 Saber Jets passed through . The code name for the base was Bluie West One . After two weeks in Greenland , JD said he would have paid his own way to Korea .
While in Greenland , his job was to originate and handle classified reports for a Major and 1st Lieutenant . Everything he sent back to the USA was either confidential , restricted or secret- mostly secret . JD was assigned to the 6611th Supply Squadron APO 858 NEAC . Before leaving Greenland , he was promoted to Staff Sergeant .
After spending one year in Greenland , his active enlistment was up , and he boarded a plane for Manhattan Beach Air Force Station in New York where he was released from active duty .
JD still had four years of required service in the Reserves but was never called back to active duty and received his honorable discharge through the mail in 1960 .
