Residents Experienced History with Prominent Descendents
The headstone marking John Dawson ' s final resting place in the Cambridge Cemetery is especially interesting .
Continued from page 4 along the creeks and then they eventually came up the hills , after more people settled here .”
Some of the early families who planted crops and raised livestock near the waterways , on the hills , and along the ridges are names still recognizable today like Cook and Kaiser , Taylor , Collier - and Dawson .
According to the Blasdel family records , John Dawson was a squatter on Jacob Bladsel ’ s land as early as 1796 . Instead of following the normal practice of the time of removing any and all squatters , Jacob Blasdel accepted Mr . Dawson ’ s right to occupy the land , eventually coming to a mutual agreement in 1814 that allowed each farmer to own acreage along both banks of Tanner ’ s Creek . Some of the John Dawson descendants raise sheep today as Mr . Dawson did in the 1800s .
In Cambridge Cemetery , on an overcast day in September , Mr . Gellert walks between the known graves of some of the earliest pioneers .
Slowly making his way to the back of the grassy plot , he reads the worn inscriptions and wonders about the lost memorials , before stopping to look at the beautifully carved stone marking John Dawson ’ s resting place . “ He ’ s got a gun , and then there ’ s a sheep … There ’ s his axe - oh it ’ s unbelievable - he ’ s got his gun , his axe , and the willow trees and sheep .”
Cambridge Cemetery on Pribble Road is one of three area cemeteries included in Saturday ’ s living history events . Between two and five o ’ clock , the public can talk with knowledgeable guides , and look across the field to where the town of Cambridge once stood . Gary Gellert hopes everyone will take advantage of the free parking at Perfect North Slopes . He explains , “ We ’ ll have a tractor and a wagon to bring people over . The pioneers will be here , people who are playing roles who will talk and answer questions .”
Decedents of John Blasdel are encouraged to learn more about their family ’ s heritage by taking advantage of an entire weekend of storytelling and document sharing . And
