Congratulations to Bobby and Eddie Obermeyer , who opened the doors to Obermeyer Marathon in Oldenburg on Sept . 11 , 1967 , when they were only 22 and 21 respectively . The brothers took a huge risk in taking over the existing station and lived within a meager budget as they embarked upon entrepreneurship at an early age .
While few service stations maintain a full-service gasoline bay today , service is what the Obermeyer brothers are all about . Getting to know and take care of their customers is what they do best . The corner station features a fresh pot of coffee to welcome visitors who stop in for gas , tires , sodas , and the latest news . In looking back , Eddie smiles as he notes , " We appreciate all the people who made us a success . With God ' s help and the help of the community , we were able to make it for 50 years ."
Drive-Thru Convenience is something we take for granted in larger cities , but in the quaint Village of Spires , business is mostly conducted in the more traditional , walk-in manner , except for twice each year when the Eagle Firemen and members of their Ladies Auxiliary host their “ Chicken Drive-Thru .” That ’ s right , in the spring and fall visitors to the firehouse can drive-thru to pick-up an order of the firemen ’ s famous fried chicken and even a few sides . As you follow the drive-thru path , you ’ ll pass the firefighters at their frying station who will pause to greet you , before entering the firehouse where the ladies auxiliary fills your order and thanks you for your patronage . Watch for the next Chicken Drive-Thru in the spring .

In other news from OA , class of 2017 graduate , Harley Kidd , was awarded the Supreme Breeding Ewe at the 2017 Indiana State Fair ! Congratulations , Harley , on your great work and dedication .
This young lady gave two thumbs up as a semi rolled out of the ’ Burg on its way to Texas , full of donated items from the locals who “ Stuffed the Truck ” to help the victims of Hurricane Harvey . Well done Oldenburgers and Hill- Rom and Crum Trucking for making this happen .
Sad News from the Village . Former Holy Family Pastor , Fr . John Turnbull , OFM , passed away on September 10 in Cincinnati . He was fondly remembered in Oldenburg and by parishioners at St . Louis Parish in Batesville where he served in the 1970 ’ s and 80 ’ s . The Franciscan priest loved people and enjoyed basketball , baseball , fishing , camping , and spreading the word of God . This good and faithful servant will be missed by many .
The Village also lost a craftsman and native on September 16 when Ed Kirschner passed suddenly . Ed was the proprietor of The Creche Shop in the ’ Burg , a small workshop on Perlen Strasse where he could be found most days designing and carving creches to adorn homes and delight families at Christmas .

I know I have said this before , but I retired more than ten years ago , and now I am not sure how I would have time to work . Sometimes we have many things we must get done and find ourselves very busy . Well , we aren ' t sitting around wondering , “ What am I going to do now ?”
The Lyttle Family Reunion was in September . Family reunions are an excellent time to visit with everyone and reminisce about old times while catching up with the news . We have relatives from Arizona , Texas , Florida , Virginia , North and South Carolina , and of course Ohio , Kentucky , and Indiana . We don ’ t get to see all of them every year . Still , we need to stay close to all of our families .
Fall is a beautiful time of the year . Seems like it is coming early this year .
Halloween is a fun time for everyone . I enjoy driving around and seeing decorations everywhere I look . We hope all of the young children get a lot of treats and have a safe fun time . Let ’ s create some great memories for children this year .
Sadly , the fall season means that the days are getting shorter . We know winter is just around the corner . Let ’ s hope for a mild winter .

Families would return time and time again to add pieces to their collection or provide treasured heirlooms for their children . We offer our condolences to Ed ’ s wife and family and hope that they find comfort in knowing Ed ’ s memory will live on in homes across the nation as families gather by their heirloom creches to welcome the Baby Jesus .

Franklin County has a little bit of holiday magic to share this holiday season . Whitetail Acres Christmas Tree Farm in Brookville , owned by Kevin and Alice Priessman , share their farm with thirteen beautiful reindeer that they have raised for the past twenty years . All of the reindeer are tame , but some are exceptionally social and eager to greet visitors . Which led the Priessmans to the idea of sharing their unique “ Reindeer Experience ” with others .
“ We went to a Christmas tree growers association meeting , and they brought down a couple hundred reindeer from Alaska ,” Alice said . “ They said it is really easy to train them . When something looks too easy , you ought to take a closer look . It was a challenge , to say the least , to train the ones from the tundra of Alaska , but calves born

Last year was the first year for Kevin and Alice to open their farm to those who would like to interact with reindeer in their pen and barnyard . A few days of snow occurred during the season , creating the perfect opportunity for photos to be taken . Vixen was more than happy to be a part of the Christmas memories .
One of the reindeer is a famous movie star . Comet got to be on the set with Mariah Carey for a Hallmark movie , " A Christmas Melody ." Be sure to ask him for his autograph ! ( See ad on page 17 .)
