I start my “ mourning period ” for summer about mid-August when the kids go back to school . It starts when the public pools start having shortened hours and culminates when the zinnias around my garden begin dying . The men in my family don ’ t understand why I plant things I cannot eat . However , I got great use out of my zinnias this year . Not only have the bouquets brightened my home and made me cheerful as I looked out my kitchen window , I took some to Margaret Linkmeyer after a recent surgery to cheer her . Judy Mosier used some for two funeral dinners at Mt . Sinai United Methodist Church . Some even graced the stage at GermanFest at St . John Lutheran Church .

Almost everyone has a pleasant memory that related to flowers . Diena Beyer , a pharmacist at Dearborn County hospital , has a love of yellow irises as they were gifted to her from the family farm in Batesville by her mother . Jeff Keller has transplanted peony bulbs to four addresses over the years . His father told him the original bulbs came over from the “ old country ”. Pam Taylor and Lisa Castillo gave out zinnia seeds at their mother ’ s funeral . I planted them , saved the seeds and have gotten two good years of joy from them !

I was pleasantly surprised on Aug . 4 when I went to Party In The Street in downtown Lawrenceburg . Not only was there a big crowd with a great band , but I was “ carded ” as I entered . At first , I was flattered , but then they told me they carded absolutely everyone . Oh well … The macaroni and cheese food truck offered all kinds of variations of macaroni and cheese . I was able to snag a dessert waffle with rum , caramel , and sea salt from the waffle food truck . I even shared a bite with my friend Jean Fouch .

Lawrenceburg , the Music on the River bands and crowds have been awesome . If you hesitate to attend due to parking , please check out the parking in the Ivy Tech parking garage that is free and convenient . Recently a family friend , Joe Smith , and wife Paula of Batesville , organized a group of sixteen people from his area and from Lawrenceburg to meet for dinner , followed by attending Music on The River . The perfect weather added to a very enjoyable evening . I am so thankful for Lawrenceburg entertainment events that can be enjoyed by so many .

Some of the activities of summer that I also mourn are church festivals . The All Saints churches have been hosting chicken dinners all summer . I was able to attend one at St . Paul ’ s in New Alsace . Richard Kuebel was one of many men who fried approximately 1375 chickens that day . Lisa Nobbe sold their infamous turtle soup in quart jars . At lunch , I happened to sit next to Father Johnathan Meyer and one of his former track students . He shared that they serve approximately 2500 at each dinner . I found it interesting that Father Meyer is a track coach at East Central High School in addition to his parish duties !

GermanFest at St . John Lutheran church in Lawrenceburg was a great success this year . The menu of pork and sauerkraut , mashed potatoes , brats , green beans , German potato salad , homemade ice cream and homemade cakes is always a crowd favorite . While a lot of volunteers working long hours are needed to make the festival work , I want to thank my German potato salad committee of Shirley Bolling , Shirley Casebolt , Margaret Bryant , Tammy Lewis and Mary Folke for all their hard work .

YORKVILLE & GUILFORD

Now that the festival is over , Yorkville and Guilford are pretty quiet . You may have noticed some work being done at the Guilford Covered Bridge Park . The sign has been updated and they have been working on the bridge for the last few weeks . I love the fact that something from the past has been kept for future generations to enjoy . Also , the old Guilford store has a new front . Back in the winter a car ran into the front of the building and caused significant damage . Over the summer it has all been restored . I am always amazed how buildings can

Only a few weeks ago the table by the window was filled with a group of mothers supporting each other after dropping off their kindergartners for the first or last time . The local boutiques down the street are replacing the bare shouldered mannequins with fall sweaters and bringing out fall scented candles . Please read on to discover some of the newer ways to get out and enjoy the new season .

One of the most unique trends happening in Harrison can be found up and down the main street in the planted pots . It is called , “ Harrison ROCKS .” The Facebook group is up to 933 members . The group exists as a random act of kindness to brighten somebody ’ s day . The idea is simple . Paint and seal some fun rocks and add it to the Facebook group . The rocks can be hidden anywhere in Harrison . Lastly , people find the rocks and join the group and share they found your rock . I have seen everything from patriotic rocks to breast cancer support rocks .

Harrison ROCKS is just another great example of why we live in such a great town . It is such a simple idea that brings an already tight knit community even closer . A creative afternoon craft for a toddler can really brighten the day of an individual at the local retirement home who finds it . My friend down the street , Sarah Kindt Spite , has had great luck with her boys finding rocks . Landon , age six , and Jackson , age five , have discovered rocks hidden in various places such as a church , a grocery store , and a restaurant . Check out the site and join the fun !

I am sure many of you still have memories of crossing the covered bridge into Guilford or when the bridge was moved into the park . I remember as a child coming to the park and being fascinated with the bridge . The general store was not only a place for staples and supplies but also a place where friends and neighbors could meet and interact . I often pass the roads that lead up to the railroad track in Guilford . With the Honda plant being in Greensburg , the trains pass by again but no passengers disembark and our little town has become a shell of what it used to be . When you travel on Bonnell Road , you will notice the rocks stacked along the roadside . Unlike our guard rails that we use today , these were each moved from Tanners Creek and stacked into

Miami Whitewater Park will soon be the place to be with the leaves starting to change . When the lake is perfectly still , the colorful trees that line it are mirrored in the water . If you have a chance to slip away , grab a blanket and hot cup of pumpkin hot chocolate and take it all in before it is gone . If you check out their calendar of events at www . greatparks . com , you will find many different ways to enjoy the park . One of the newer events I discovered is called “ Forest Bathing .” Forest Bathing is the Japanese practice of Shinrin-yoku , where you take in the forest atmosphere in hopes for a healthier mind and body . If that ’ s not your style , try out one of the “ Monarch Tagging ” classes . A night bike ride is offered to experience the park , “ after hours ”. The evening ride entails a 7.8- mile pedal around the Shaker Trail while the sun sets and nighttime takes over .

The next time you drive down Yorkridge or Bonnell Roads and make the turn through Guilford , take a moment to think of all of those who came before us and created our little towns with their dreams and hard work . They survived floods , the rise of the railroad , and so many changes to create the area that we call home .
