Indiana Announces InSideOut Initiative Partnership
Indiana has been named the next state to be involved with The InSideOut Initiative and implement the teachings and progress of the newly developed program thanks to the support of the Indianapolis Colts .
The landscape of youth athletics has seen a shift in ideology and structure in recent years , with a transition from opportunities from recreational fun and focus on the development of the individual , to performance driven , ultra-competitive and results based teams and leagues across the country . In seemingly all sports , there has been a dramatic rise in the number of elite leagues , and traveling programs aimed at providing opportunities for select youth to develop their game and prepare for a jump to the next level .
While there is nothing wrong with healthy competition , one could argue that this competitive structure even sets the stage for a competitive nature later in life . The problem with a system solely aimed at developing athletes for collegiate and professional levels is that less than three percent of high school athletes advance to the collegiate level , and only about one percent of those select few make the
leap to the next stage , according to InSideOutInitiative . org .
Backed by the NFL Foundation and piloted in 2015 statewide in Texas and Colorado , The InsideOut Initiative is " a nonprofit aimed at transforming the “ win‐at‐all‐costs ” sports culture in communities across the country . The focus of the organization is to redevelop the culture of youth athletics , with an emphasis on coaches and athletics supporters working with athletes to develop both competitors as well as people .
A press release by the IHSAA outlined the purpose of the program ; “ For sports to provide students with human growth opportunities and moral development , we must move beyond defining success by the scoreboard and create space in the culture for a higher purpose ,” says In- SideOut Initiative co‐founder and executive director , Jody Redman . “ The InSideOut Initiative provides a blueprint for systemic change — and guides communities into reframing the purpose of sports , and building a system that focuses on the development of the educational , social and emotional well‐being of each student‐ athlete .”
With the partnership school boards , superintendents , administrators , athletic directors , coaches , parents and school communities will be receiving training and will begin " implementing policies , strategies and procedures to hire , train , evaluate and support transformational coaches ."
The IHSAA is in the process of evaluating individuals throughout the state to lead the program and introduce
The InSideOut Initiative to their communities .

Invitational Headlined by Trojan Runners
The boys ’ and girls ’ East Central High School Cross Country Teams showed that they are indeed forces to be reckoned with this season as they were among the headline performances at the Rushville Invitational . The invitational is one of the largest of the year and schools are broken down to compete by school size , leaving East Central among powerhouse programs in Indiana in the " big school " division .
The Lady Trojans runnersup out of 11 teams , only being following short of Indianapolis Cathedral , who dominated the standings all day . Their performance was encouraging and showed the strides the Lady Trojans have taken after they finished third in the invitational just a year ago . Individually , the Lady Trojans team was led by Abby Bittner who took 4th place overall in a time of 20:33 . Lauren Greiwe ran a fast race and took 8th followed by her teammate , and newcomer to the sport , Emmy Fey in 9th . Lily Greiwe and Emilee Wedding finished out the scoring Trojans in 15th and 17th . This is the second time that the Lady Trojans have placed second in a big meet and the second time they were able to get all of their top 5 scoring runners in the top 20 positions .
The boys ’ team placed 4th with state ranked Indianapolis Cathedral and Jennings County in the first two team positions and New Palestine in 3rd . The boys ’ race was won by Cole Hocker in 16:15 and the girls ’ race was won by Gilliam Cridge in a time of
The Trojan boy ' s and girls ' programs are off to a strong start this season with top 5 finishes at the Rushville Invitational .
19:17 .
The boys ’ team was led by Garrett Ardis who was leading the pack for the entire first kilometer . He was eventually overcome by the state contending Irish and Panthers and placed 11th in a time of 17:36 . This is the second race that Ardis has led for the Trojans , and right behind him were seniors , and twin brothers , Kaleb ( 13th ) and Kameron Geisen ( 16th ). Andrew White ( 19th ), also a senior was not far behind ; all of these men ran under 18 minutes . This too was a showing of how much the program has improved as there was not one Trojan under the eighteen- minute barrier a year ago . The fifth runner for the Trojans was Kyle Gutfreund in 36th
place . It will be essential for the Trojan ’ s success to close the gap between the 4th and 5th runner . Kyle has made great improvements and shows potential .
Trojan assistant coach Fr . Jonathan Meyer noted about the day ; " Overall it was a great day of racing ; 11 out of the 16 boys and 7 out of the 11 girls ran their season best times on the course . The girls placed higher as a team in the team standings and both teams ran substantially faster this year than last year as individuals ; some of them dropping over two minutes in their times ."
Best of luck to both programs as they look to build on their early success this season .
