Students interacted firsthand with community members and offered assistance in many areas. Fifteen students and faculty members saw five hundred twelve patients and aided in administering $221,249 worth of free services. Some individuals seen at the clinic traveled more than two hours to attend the two-day clinic. The participating students are already brainstorming about fund raisers to prepare for a spring trip. “This was a great experience for us all,” said Jesse Terrill, a medical assisting student. “We had the chance to get to know our classmates and bond with instructors. I got to be a part of something meaningful, as well as use some of the skills Page 7A I am learning in school.” The Ivy Tech students who participated were Amy Payne of Lawrenceburg, Caitlyn Feldkamp of Dillsboro, Cody Deerberg of Metamora, Daisy Santana of Aurora, Desiree Hulsey of Aurora, Gavin Williams of Milan, Hannah Rode of Batesville, Jesse Terrill of Aurora, Kendall Schlemmer of Lawrenceburg, Kristina Cowan of Lawrenceburg, Russina Moore of Versailles, Sara Sams of Sunman, Shyla Prince of Patriot, Samantha Weiler of Batesville, and Tonya Riley of Milan. The Dearborn County Chamber of Commerce recently hosted a legislative luncheon that was open to the public at the Ivy Tech River- front Campus. Guest speak- ers included Randy Lyness, Randy Frye, Chip Perfect, Jeff Raatz and lobbyists for the county and Lawrence- burg. The topics of discussion revolved around what to expect from the State legis- lature during the upcoming session, and how it will affect businesses in the area. Gov- ernor Holcomb's Next Level program will be the driving force for the next legislative session's agenda. The five sections, or pillars, of the agenda include: 1. diversifying the economy 2. upgrading infrastructure 3. strengthening the workforce 4. a ttacking the drug epidemic 5. d elivery of great govern- ment service Representative Frye stated, "A good legislative session is when we let the main thing be the main thing." This means that nothing should deter at- tention from the main subject and goals at hand. "A deep knowledge of how things work requires more than one term in office," said Senator Chip Perfect. Randy Lyness agreed by saying, "It takes a while to figure out what's going on to get things done." Both gentle- men confirmed that they will be running in the next elec- tion. The first pillar will require the passing of a truly bal- anced budget as well as a balanced budget amendment. The State must also maintain reserve funds at appropriate levels. Upgrading infrastructure will require maintaining ex- isting roads and bridges while investing in future projects. More funding for local roads and bridges through a federal dollar swap will ensure that this occurs. Strengthening the work- force may lead to the future appointment of a Secretary of Education to aid in the increased investment in pre-K programs. A potential Sec- retary of Education would also lead a statewide effort to align STEM efforts through- out K-12 education. State funding for the E-rate federal match to ensure WiFi for all studen ts is considered vital to strengthening the workforce. The legislative luncheon ended with a question and answer session in which several businesses and teach- ers inquired about details concerning their appropriate professions. The next legislative session runs from Jan. 2 to Mar. 15, 2018. We Need Listings! CORNERSTONE C CORNERSTONE W e’re IN YOUr C OrNer. REALTY INC.
