4/14/15: ARLINGTON, Texas - TCU scored five early runs and rode another dominating performance
from Tyler Alexander on the mound to a 7-1 victory over UT Arlington Tuesday night. Elliott Barzilli homered
for the first time this season to lead the offensive charge.
Alexander (3-2) was sharp over seven-plus innings of work. He allowed an unearned run on three hits, walked
two and tied his career-high with nine strikeouts. Two of the three hits he allowed in the game didn't make it
past the infield. Alexander retired the side in order in four of the seven innings he pitched.
Trey Teakell retired both batters he faced,
getting a double play and a strikeout in the
eighth. Riley Ferrell came on and struck out
the side in the ninth to lock up the victory
for TCU.
TCU took an early 1-0 lead in the first
inning. Jeremie Fagnan ripped a one-out
single and was standing on second with one
out after a wild pitch. A two-out error
allowed Fagnan to score, giving the Frogs
the early lead.
The Frogs put a four-spot on the board in the second to open up a 5-0 lead. Nolan Brown led off the frame
with a base hit. Elliott Barzilli launched a home run over the left field fence for a 3-0 lead. Derek Odell kept
the hit-parade going with a liner up the middle. Cody Jones was plunked on the shoulder to put two on. A wild
pitch had both runners in scoring position for Connor Wanhanen, who delivered a two-run, two-out double to
deep center field.
UT Arlington saw its first opportunity to get on the board go by the wayside in the fourth. A lead-off single
broke a string of nine straight retired by Alexander. With one out, a bouncer to third look like it would be an
inning-ending double play, but the throw to second sailed into right field putting runners on the corners.
Alexander left the runners where they were with back-to-back strikeouts to keep the Mavericks off the board.
After being held in check by a pair of UTA relievers, the Frogs found the scoreboard again in the seventh.
Wanhanen singled with one out and moved to second on a walk to Dane Steinhagen. With two outs, Nolan
Brown bounced a single through the right side to drive in Wanhanen for a 6-0 lead.
The Mavericks got on the scoreboard in the eighth without the benefit of a hit. A pair of walks around an error
loaded the bases with nobody out, ending Alexander's evening. Teakell came on and minimized the damage to
just one run as he got a double play and a strikeout to end the frame with the Frogs still leading 6-1.
TCU got the run back in the ninth. A pair of walks around an Evan Skoug base hit loaded the bases with
nobody out. Brown collected his second RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly to account for the final score.
