A classic is something that everybody wants
to have read and nobody wants to read.
Mark Twain
It seems the more things change the
more they stay the same. Students
today are still reading the same
novels that were being read 20, 30
and even 40 years age. Books like
To Kill a Mockingbird , Lord of the
flies , Of Mice and Men were
probably read by your grandparents
and will probably be read by your
grandchildren.
It seems that in the world of literature
teachers are slow to change the
reading list. One of the newer titles
on our list is The House on Mango
Street by Sandra Connor. This book
is described on Wikipedia as a
coming of age novel...and it was
written in 1984- 34 years ago. But
even though many of these books
have been around for years, they are
still considered favorites of students
today. For example the freshman this
year found Tears of a Tiger to be
their favorite. While the juniors were
split on The Crucible and Of Mice
and Men , the seniors favored And
Then There Were None . What about
the sophomores you ask? Well they
didn t care for anything.
