TASK 1:Write a short historical introduction to the spice trade.

TASK 2:FIND OUT

Where do spices grow? In what sort of countries do they grow best?

What parts of the plants are used as spices?

What are spices? What are their uses?

How were they used in olden days? Why were they more important then, than

they are now? Why were they so expensive?

Present your information for Task 2 in an interesting and creative way.

TASK 3:RESEARCH THESE SPICES

Cinnamon, pepper, ginger, cloves, vanilla, mace, nutmeg, saffron, cardamom, turmeric.

TASK 4:INVESTIGATION

What spices do you have at home? Write down their names.

Now find out the use of each spice. Is it used with meat / fish / desserts? Has it

any other uses, e.g. as medicine? Write this information by the name of the

spice.

Very carefully investigate the smell and taste of each spice and write down what

you discover. Make a table of your results and discoveries for Task 4.

NB: We hope to visit a modern day spice factory in the January Term.

GUIDELINES

Your project MUST be done in your OWN HANDWRITING!

Keep writing to a minimum.

When producing a project, the presentation is just as important as the contents.

Use bullet points. This means it is just as important to be neat and well

organised as it is to include lots of information.

You may ask family and friends for ideas, suggestions and explanations, but you

must do the actual work yourself.

When you have found some information, do not just copy it into your project.

Make sure you understand it, then write it in a shorter way and in your own words

and your own handwriting.

Arrange your information in any way you like to make an interesting project.

If your project is 2D it should be no bigger than size A3. If your project is 3D it

should be no more than 20cm in any direction. Marks will be deducted for

oversized projects.

You can use maps, pictures, diagrams, recipes, drawings, etc. to make your

project more interesting and colourful.

GOOD PLACES TO LOOK FOR INFORMATION:

Encyclopaedias: Try the senior library and ask the Librarian for help.

Computers: e.g. Encarta, the internet. Also good for making title pages and

subtitles, decorations, maps, pictures, etc. Do not cut and paste text into your

project.

Cookery books.

Have fun!
