History of the Cups
33 School Cups are presented at Speech Day ( the latest edition being the The Francombe Cup for Outstanding Personal Development ( 2023 ) presented by our outgoing Head , Ali ). We share the history of some of the cups :
Buckley Thompson Bowl ( 1991 ) ( originally for Girls Athletics , now presented for the Best All Rounder Girls Bandathlon ). There was no trophy for the girls , there was a boy ’ s trophy ( The Bridges and Hawkes Cup ) given the year previous . So Jenny Thompson ( who helped with Brownies ) and Chris ( a teacher ) & John Buckley donated this cup .
The Davidson General Knowledge Trophy ( 1998 ) Neil , assistant Maths teacher , and his wife Linda Davidson who taught in the Junior School started the General Knowledge Competition .
The Julian Cup for Boys Drama ( 1995 ) was named after a pupil , Julian Cheatle . Interestingly , we do not know who donated The Drama Cup for Girls . Was it done by the School to balance up the Boys cup ?
The Horner Mt Kenya Endevour Award ( 2014 ) This was donated by the family of Sam and Tom Horner for a child that distinguishes themselves for perseverance whilst climbing Mt Kenya
Makwa Cup for Cock House ( Senior School ) was presented by Ragna Momor Gumoes , father of Linda Gumoes who taught at The Banda from 1971 to 2016 . It had been the original cup at Thika European Primary School , for Livingstone ( blue ) and McKinnon ( red ). When the school closed , the trophy was returned to Linda ’ s family and she thought it fitting to donate it to The Banda .
