Atlanta Bar Association Celebrating Service Pro Bono Award Recipient Jeffrey J. Nix Jeffrey J. Nix Troutman Sanders LLP Jeffrey J. Nix, a partner with Troutman Sanders LLP, is the 2011 recipient of the Atlanta Bar Association’s 2011 Celebrating Service Pro Bono Award. The Pro Bono Award is presented to a member of the Atlanta Bar Association in good standing who has made significant contributions to providing pro bono legal services to indigent individuals or non-profit organizations on matters or projects adopted, created or sponsored by or through the Atlanta Bar Association or one of its sections. Mr. Nix has tirelessly donated his time and talents to Atlanta Legal Aid by assisting cancer patients prepare and execute wills, advance directives, and guardianships, helping indigent cancer patients put their final affairs in order. Mr. Nix was also instrumental in expanding the Troutman Sanders Advanced Directives project to a team of dedicated Troutman Sanders lawyers and paralegals who visits DeKalb Medical’s oncology wing once a week, armed with laptops and flash drives. Mr. Nix has also worked with Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation’s Wills for Emergency Personnel Project, drafting wills for police officers, firefighters and other first responders. Mr. Nix’s compassion for his clients, his sense of humor, and his professionalism have earned him the respect of his peers in the legal community at large, those at Troutman Sanders and Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers Foundation, specifically, and the staff at DeKalb Medical Center, all of whom appreciate and admire his dedication. Mr. Nix’s legal service to the community extends beyond preparing and executing wills and advance directives. Mr. Nix also volunteers for Project Salute, a legal clinic that assists veterans in claiming the benefits due them; and Georgia Appleseed’s Effective Student Discipline: Keeping Kids in Class project, a study conducted to provide a comprehensive, objective assessment of public school student discipline policy, practice and outcomes in Georgia, and identify any action recommendations that would benefit all of Georgia’s students in light of the phenomenon that arguably excessive school disciplinary action negatively impacts the success of students’ academic achievements. Nix, the 2011 recipient of the Atlanta Bar Association’s Celebrating Service Pro Bono Award! ■ Atlanta Bar Association Celebrating Service Community Service Award Recipient Women in the Profession Section T he Women in the Profession Section of the Atlanta Bar Association is the 2011 recipient of the Association’s Celebrating Service Community Service Award. The award is given to an Association member or section that has made significant contributions to the community by participating in or coordinating a community service project that is adopted, created or sponsored by or through the Atlanta Bar Association or one of its sections. The Women in the Profession Section has made many significant contributions to the community through Atlanta Bar Association projects. During the last year, the members of the Women in the Profession Section (“WIP”) have volunteered in numerous community service projects. WIP members have volunteered as elves at the DFACS Christmas Party for the Atlanta Santa Project, held a canned food and clothing drive for Hosea Williams’s Feed the Hungry program, and helped MedShare The Official News Publication of the Atlanta Bar Association International inspect and package donated medical supplies sent to health clinics around the world. Additionally, WIP members designed shoeboxes filled with toiletries provided to homeless families at the Gateway Transition Center in Atlanta through the United Way Shoe Box project, and participated in Hands on Atlanta’s Service Juris day by cleaning a creek along a new neighborhood nature preserve in the Kirkwood community. WIP made numerous other volunteer activities available to its members, who volunteered their time freely. WIP has done an outstanding job creating and continuing a tradition of service.
