SECTION UPDATE
CRIMINAL LAW
MAY LUNCHEON
On Wednesday, May 9, the Criminal Law Section held
its May Luncheon at Ri Ra Irish Pub in Midtown. That
afternoon, we were regaled with a fantastic presentation
on the Tex McIver trial from two lawyers who were
intimately involved: Amanda Clarke Palmer (left) and
Cara Convery (right).
Jake Waldrop Truth and Justice Award Ceremony
presented by the Criminal Law Section. This year’s
award winner was Carl Lietz .The award is presented
annually to an attorney practicing criminal law in
Atlanta who embodies and exemplifies a passion and
dedication for true justice. This award was created in
honor and memory of our friend and colleague Jake
Waldrop, a career attorney for the Federal Defender
Program. Jake was a warrior for justice. His focus was
never about winning or losing. It was about getting it
right. He lived this out in his professional career as
well as in his service to the community.
The Truth and Justice Award acknowledges the achieve-
ments and contributions of attorneys who have dem-
onstrated excellence and professionalism in their legal
practice as well as an uncommon commitment to
protecting and promoting a fair justice system.
Ms. Palmer was part of the McIver defense team,
and ADA Convery was one of the prosecutors. They
provided fantastic insight into the case, and gave us a
behind-the-scenes look at their preparation, and what
it was like to have your every move scrutinized by a
television audience eager to comment on social media.
