counsel of the Georgia Democratic Party; and Eric Segall,
professor at Georgia State University.
The session on “Challenges of Maintaining a Democracy”
was moderated by Dr. Yolande Tomilson, national education
coordinator of the U.S. Human Rights Network, and speakers
included Sarah Johnson, assistant director of the Democracy
Program at The Carter Center; Cynthia Tucker, visiting
professor, Charlayne Hunter-Gault, Distinguished Writer-inResidence; Michael O’Reilly, deputy executive director for
international coordination and member advocacy for Amnesty
International; and David Vigilante, Senior Vice President
Legal, CNN, and Senior Vice President and Associate General
Counsel for Turner Broadcasting System, Inc.
In the evening, a documentary of photography was presented
by Dr. Doris Derby. Additionally, a presentation on the
The Official News Publication of the Atlanta Bar Association
“National Center for Civil and Human Rights” was given by
Deborah Richardson, executive vice president. To close
out the program, a session on “Perspectives on Voting
Rights and Enforcement: A Conversation” was presented
and moderated by Maria Saporta, columnist for the Atlanta
Business Chronicle, and editor of SaportaReport.com.
Speakers included Georgia Secretary of State Brian P. Kemp;
the Rev. Dr. C.T. Vivian, dean of the Urban Institute at the
Interdenominational Theological Center; and U.S. Attorney
Sally Yates, Northern District of Georgia.
The State Bar Association and Atlanta Bar Association
