was prosecuted, and it appeared the Russians were intent on policing the
market. However, when Putin consolidated power, Browder’s success as a
whistleblower abruptly ended. Indeed, the Russian government blacklisted
Browder and then moved to divest Browder’s fund of all assets and to force
his lawyers either to flee the country or be imprisoned. One of Browder’s
attorneys, Serigei Magnitsky, stayed, was imprisoned, beaten and died in
jail. Browder then campaigned for justice in the United States, ultimately
assisting in the enactment of “The Magnitsky Act,” which was designed
to punish Russian officials responsible for the death of Sergei Magnitsky by
prohibiting their entrance into the United States and their use of the U.S.
banking system. The Russian government response was to deny Americans
adoption of Russian children and to hold a criminal trial against Browder, in
abstenia, and against Magnitsky, then a dead defendant.

I've just finished reading Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honey-
man. It's a funny and moving novel, with an uplifting story about a quirky
protagonist who overcomes her profound loneliness and troubled past.
