Smith Miller & Martin PLLC, Secretary, ACYL [email protected] F ollowing another successful Associates Campaign, which wrapped up at the end of September, the Atlanta Council of Younger Lawyers closed out 2013 with several events, including our monthly happy hours, Beer and CLE Series, and Mentoring Breakfasts. We visited the relatively new Monday Night Brewery in October thanks to sponsorship from FirmTech, which was represented by John Schaub and David Boughter. The happy hour took place the night before bar results were released, so hopefully we were able to help some of our newly minted members take the edge off. Our January happy hour was held at Ormsby’s and sponsored by Bay Mediation and Arbitration Services. We had one of the bocce courts set up for some friendly competition. Additionally, we collected a generous amount of gently-used business clothing to donate to Therrell High School in support of their professional clothing drive. Thank you to all who contributed. Our three part “Life of a Trial” seminar in our Beer and CLE Series concluded at the end of November. Seminar 2 took place in October at Manuel’s Tavern and covered the topic of “Effective Witness Examinations.” Lynn Roberson, Adam Malone and the Honorable Wes Tailor provided their expertise as our guest panelists. We had a packed house and received terrific feedback from the attendees. The finale of the three part series covered “Closing Arguments” and was also very well attended. Chuck Van Horn, Bill Hill and the Honorable Tangela Barrie volunteered their time and delivered a great presentation. We are looking forward to continuing our Beer and CLE Series in the spring with respect to topics involving transactional law. The goal of the Mentoring Breakfasts is to deliver to new lawyers valuable “real world” information that is not typically covered in law school curriculum. During 2014, in addition to leading our own volunteer efforts, we will continue to support the volunteer work of other Sections of the Atlanta Bar, including the Law School Outreach Committee’s Law Student Mock Interview/Resume Review Workshop, which was held on Saturday, January 25, 2014, the Saturday Lawyer Program with AVLF, which is scheduled fo ȁ5
