Celebrating 125 Years • Call chambers personally with questions. If time really doesn’t permit, give your assistants the information that they need to ask intelligent questions. Make sure they respect the staff attorneys and their time. Staff Attorneys are people, too. • If an extension is really needed, put the request in writing, describe the parties’ diligence and tell the Court why more time is still needed. • Contact the court promptly if a discovery dispute is derailing the deadlines previously established. complaining about a perceived discovery violation. If you won’t, have it sent to someone who will. • If the case is settled and removed from the trial calendar, promptly file a dismissal and copy the court. • Be nice. • Understand that each judge’s chambers has a communication preference. If it is by email, include an email address in everything you submit to the Court. • Unless the chambers you are communicating with prefers the phone, use (but don’t abuse) email.
