THE 411
BREAKFAST PROGRAMS DON’T EXPERIENCE F.O.M.O.:
DATES & UPCOMING EVENTS
This year, the Litigation Section built our programs
around the Life of a Trial, and each presentation has
been better than the next. In October, Pete Law en-
gaged the audience with his war stories and the do’s
and don’ts of jury selection. November’s presentation
on opening statement did not disappoint. Several gutsy,
distinguished Atlanta lawyers, Bruce P. Brown, Ken
Hodges, Barbara Marschalk, Laura Shamp, Nicholas
Smith, and Taylor Tribble presented their 5 minute
mock opening in front of their fellow peers based on
a mock fact pattern we gave them. Needless to say,
the November panelists slayed. At the end of 2017, the
Litigation Section wrapped up the 2017 calendar year
with our program on Lay & Expert Trial Testimony:
A View from the Bench. Judges Alan Harvey, Robert
McBurney, Jane Morrison, and Paige Whitaker gave
our litigators invaluable insight on the do’s and don’ts
in their courtroom. Just a few weeks ago, we kicked off
2018 with a panel of distinguished lawyers and judges,
Brannon J. Arnold, Thomas W. Curvin, Judge Shawn
Ellen LaGrua, Joyce Gist Lewis, and Michael J. War-
shauer discussing real and demonstrative evidence.
The panelists discussed the law as well as the value of
using demonstrative evidence in the courtroom. We
are so grateful to our board members and the panel-
ists for putting on such engaging and informational
programs for our members. If you have not had a chance to attend our events or
wish you could attend more–fear not, we have more
programs, events, and happy hours coming up before
the bar year is over!
JANUARY HAPPY HOUR
With our wildly successful SUPERPASS, comes the
opportunity to attend our section’s happy hour for
free. This January, we hosted a happy hour with the
Labor & Employment Section. The event took place
at the new and hip restaurant, Rose & Rye, located
inside the historic castle mansion at midtown. The
event was extremely well attended with fifty-nine
litigators mingling, eating, drinking, and laughing.
Below is a list of the remaining dates and topics for
the Life of a Trial Series:
02/09/18 Damages
03/09/18 Closing Argument
04/13/18 Objections & Appeal
05/11/18 Trial Ethics & Professionalism
Trying Your Case in Mediation (CLE)
Our Judges Luncheon will take place at the Capital City
Club on March 14, 2018 followed by the Bench & Bar
on May 8, 2018. If you have not already calendared
these events, make sure you do. These events are great
opportunities to meet some Judges and other fellow
litigators, and you won’t want to miss them.
Lastly, we are having another happy hour in May
that we will sponsor with various other Atlanta Bar
Association Sections. Stay tuned for details.
Hope to see you at one of our upcoming events!
