riage license. Laughing, she said
the groom knows they’re getting
married, just not when or where.
That settled, I asked about the
location. “It’s a health spa. I want
us to be getting massages when
you come in and perform the
ceremony. He’ll be so surprised.”
And he was, as was I. They’d just
donned their terrycloth robes
when I walked in. (Thank good-
ness.) Flickering banana-scented
candles offered the only illumina-
tion; the New Age music was all
zithers, sitars, and tanpuras. The
bride was in her early thirties, the
groom in his seventies. He was
stunned when I entered, wearing
my judicial robe, but he burst into
laughter when he realized his time
was up. I offered the traditional
vows and they exchanged rings. As
I signed the license, they toasted
their nuptials with champagne
and snacked on canapes. It’s the
only wedding I’ve ever performed
where all the par ticipants wore
robes.
