Finding Value in Traveling

I must admit that , when first asked to share my thoughts on travel , I was a bit stumped on how to meaningfully tie that to the day-to-day lives of those of us in the legal profession . Granted , professional travel is a necessity ; and , at times , a grind . Personal travel is likely less frequent for and can — for a variety of professional reasons — create its own stresses . These , what I think we ’ d most consider less-than-ideal , consequences of travel led me to wonder – if we cannot avoid these downsides , how might we best offset them ? How might we “ find value ” in travelling ?

One idea that first came to mind is finding a way to focus on the positive experiences available while travelling . I think this goes for most things in life , but if we proactively designate some down time for ourselves — that ’ s half the battle . Intentionally relaxing can recharge us , reinvigorate our minds , and give us time to refresh and brainstorm new ideas . All of this can be easy to dismiss , particularly during professional trips ; and perhaps part of why the legal profession is known for its history of health issues , whether physical , mental , or addiction related . Even if it ’ s only for a few hours , taking care of ourselves enables us to excel at serving others .
At least for me , the above sentiments also ring true in personal travel . Visiting new places and meeting new people provides a balance to those days spent sitting in front of a computer monitor for twelve or more hours . I find value as well in ( at least partially ) avoiding the known touristy attractions and sites , opting instead to go off-the-beaten-path and to immerse with the local vibe , people , and culture . If nothing else , this provides an avenue to exchange perspectives and grow on
