T
he Estate Planning and Probate Section continues
its year, and the end of 2014 in good fashion. For
Thanksgiving, as Chair I give my thanks to the
Section’s officers and Board members who year after year
help guide us.
Katrenia Collins has done a fantastic job in organizing our
breakfast programs. In the last report I mentioned that
Shunta Vincent McBride of DLA Piper was the speaker
for November presenting her topic of Heirs Property: Title
Through Descendant’s Estate & Georgia Real Property
Title Standards. In December we welcomed Ronnie
Genser to speak on P.O.L.S.T. and Advance Directives, The
Conversations Behind the Forms. The work of attorneys
in our area of practice with families have to address both
property distribution and personal care issues. The scope
of the presentations throughout this year reflect the range
of topics that are important to practitioners. The lineup for
January and beyond is looking great, and we will have our
annual update on Recent Developments in Georgia Fiduciary
Law from Mary Radford of Georgia State in April.
There are at least two social events on the calendar between
February and May. Along with the Elder Law Section and the
Tax Section there will be a social with the Financial Planners
Association on February 19, 2015 at Gordon Biersch in
Buckhead. On May 7, 2015 we will return to Gordon Biersch
for a social event with the Family Law Section.
The holiday season also gives us time to reflect on our
relationship with the community. The Section has been a
longstanding supporter of the Atlanta Volunteer Lawyers
Foundation. Our donations to AVLF are made in honor of
our presenters. Marty Ellin does wonders in coordinating
so many programs at AVLF. Of particular importance to our
Section are the Probate Information Centers (PIC) for the
Probate Court of Fulton County and the Probate Court of
DeKalb County. Judge Rosh from DeKalb County spoke
briefly at the November breakfast and those present filled
the signup sheet for the DeKalb PIC. We expect the same
when Judge Toomer from Fulton County asks for the Fulton
PIC. The reach of the AVLF was also seen at the November
winetasting event at the World of Coca-Cola, attended by five
(5) of the Section’s Board members.
As always, I thank the Board members of the Section and
our sponsors for their continued work and involvement with
our members.
