killers . Other podcasts deal with early European witch hunts and trials ( Episodes 13-14 ), the Heaven ’ s Gate cult mass suicide ( Episode 8 ), and even Jim Williams of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil ( Episode 32 ).
The most recent episode involves Joseph Roy “ Joe ” Metheny , who confessed to killing a total of 13 people , although he was only convicted of two murders , due to insufficient evidence . We learn early in the podcast that , like so many serial killers , Metheny had a very difficult childhood .
Jennifer L . Van Wey and Summer Schmidt from State Court of DeKalb County host a true crime podcast .
L et me start with a confession : I have only dipped my ears into ( to date ) 39 episodes of " Fresh Brewed Noir ," so these are first and incomplete impressions . However , I am already swayed by the attention to – often gruesome - detail , as well as the way Schmidt and Van Wey use easy banter to let their personalities shine through and dispel the inevitable gory aspects of the stories they recount .
Let me be the first to tell you — Summer Schmidt and Jennifer L . Van Wey ( State Court of DeKalb County ) pull no punches and spare no details ( as disturbing as some are ) as they recount the gruesome careers of famous and not-so-famous killers .

His father was an abusive alcoholic who died when he was six , and he was raised by a single mother . A 450-pound man ironically nicknamed “ Tiny ,” Metheny is most “ celebrated ” for his selfconfessed cannibalism : in a jailhouse confession , Metheny claimed that he chopped up his victims ’ bodies and mixed their flesh into the beef and pork patties he sold out of a small roadside barbecue stand . Of course , this claim ( boast ?) was never proven . Metheny died in prison in 2017 .
One of the most appealing features of the podcast is the obvious friendship between Schmidt and Van Wey , which reveals itself in the way they chat with each other during each podcast , almost finishing each other ’ s sentences . They talk about what they had for lunch . They share their professional skepticism for some of the more improbable ( or fabricated ) tales woven by their subjects . Yet , most impressively , they point out some of the similarities and differences between their current subject and other topics that they have featured on their podcasts .
This is just a taste , but I look forward to hearing what Schmidt and Van Wey are brewing up next , and encourage you to tune in , on Apple Podcast , Spotify , and all other podcast platforms .
