SECTION UPDATE

FAMILY LAW

By Hannibal F . Heredia Hedgepeth , Heredia & Rieder hheredia @ hhrfamilylaw . com
The 2015-2016 fiscal year ended with the presentation of the recognition plaque for service to Louis Tesser for his leadership as the Chair of our section through an active year . The Section through his leadership and that of Mindy Pillow established the Kurt Kegel Memorial Scholarship . The unexpected loss of our colleague , Kurt Kegel , a former ABA Family Law Section Chair , in April 2016 , inspired the Section ’ s Board of Directors to honor him and his zeal for legal education by establishing this award . The scholarship awards two law students , whom display a developing passion for the practice of family law , the cost to attend the annual ICLE Family Law Institute . The Section will be accepting applications in February or March of 2017 to select the first recipients of the scholarship . We hope that Kurt would be delighted with our decision to honor him by encouraging law students to develop their own passion for family law through covering the costs of attending a seminar that is not often affordable to law students .
Upcoming Breakfast and Award Luncheon Calendars should be marked now for Cobb County Superior Court ’ s Judge Anne Harris talk at our monthly breakfast on September 15 and the presentation of the annual Family First Award at our annual section luncheon honoring the Fulton County Bench on November 10 .
Brews for Tunes The Section will be presenting the Third Annual Brews for Tunes fundraiser expected to happen in mid- October . Brews for Tunes is our annual fundraiser held at one of Atlanta ’ s local breweries . The proceeds benefit the Atlanta Music Project . AMP provides intensive , tuition-free music education for underserved youth right in their neighborhood . A ticket to the event includes beers from the local brewery , food pairings , a brewery tour , and live music . Details are being finalized as this article goes to the publisher , so be on the lookout for an announcement on where and when the event will take place this year .
Christian City For at least five years , the Family Law Section has collected holidays gifts for the children who reside at Christian City and this year the tradition will continue . Christian City ministers to families , but focuses primarily on the needs of abused and abandoned children , the aged and infirm . Services provided include residential , health and social services delivered in a manner consistent with the Christian faith . Each year , Christian City provides a list of children and their “ wish lists ” and the children are adopted by members of the section .
We look forward to the upcoming year and look forward to seeing everyone at our next event .
